From 15 to 16 February 2025, the “International Symposium on STEM Literacy” are organized by the Faculty of Education, the University of Macau and supported by the Education and Youth Development Bureau (DSEDJ) and the Centre for Science and Engineering Promotion-Macao Base for Primary & Secondary STEM Education of the Faculty of Science and Technology, was successfully held at the Mr. and Mrs. Lau Chor Tak Lecture Theatre, Anthony Lau Building and Faculty of Education of the University of Macau (UM) . In the opening ceremony of the first day, Prof. Yonghua SONG, Rector of UM delivered a speech, in which he first extended a warm welcome to the guests and emphasized that, as a young institution of higher learning rooted in the Macao Special Administrative Region, UM has always been on a mission to build an open platform and to promote academic innovation, Prof. Song mentioned in particular that, after the opening of the new campus in Hengqin, UM has made remarkable breakthroughs in disciplinary construction, research cooperation and internationalization. He also spoke highly of the contributions made by the FED for UM’s educational endeavors, and encouraged the faculty and students to realize more values in scientific exploration and to inject vitality into global education.

Prof. Lianghuo FAN, Dean of FED reviewed the growth of the faculty and emphasized the fruitful achievements made in recent years through deepening education reform and promoting scientific cooperation. He expressed his hope that the symposium would stimulate new thinking, promote cross-border integration and innovation, and facilitate the development of science education practices. Dr. Wai Keong TANG, Chief of the Department of Educational Resources of the Education and Youth Development Bureau of Macao SAR, pointed out that Macao has always been committed to enhancing the scientific and technological literacy of students, and through teacher training and the construction of innovative educational resource platforms, it has been helping to upgrade the education system, further promote the integration of science and technology with education, and facilitate the sustainable development of the society. The five renowned scholars were invited as the keynote speakers included Prof. Lynn BRYAN, Purdue University; Prof. Sibel ERDURAN, University of Oxford; Prof. David FORTUS, The Weizmann Institute of Science; Prof. Yeping LI, Texas A&M University and Prof. Gillian ROEHRIG, University of Minnesota to share their views and focus on many topics of STEM education, such as collaborative problem solving in engineering design, STEM literacy as literacy in STEM, etc. Meanwhile, a number of concurrent sessions were set up for the participants to have in-depth discussions on various aspects of STEM curriculum implementation and teaching, and the professional development of teachers, etc. More than 200 people participated in this 2-day symposium, both online and offline. The symposium was successfully concluded on February 16 2025.
