UM Mandarin Debating Team Participated at the 5th Inter-Tertiary Mandarin Debating Friendship Competition for Freshmen
On March 16, 2025, the UM Mandarin Debating Team went to the Taipa Campus of the Macao University of Tourism (UTM) to participate in the 5th Inter-Tertiary Mandarin Debating Friendship Competition for Freshmen, organized by UTM’s Xi Sheng Debating Team. The competition attracted participation from several Macao tertiary institutions, including the University of Macau, City University of Macau, Macau University of Science and Technology, Macao Polytechnic University, and Macao University of Tourism (listed in no particular order).
As a platform dedicated to nurturing debating talent among freshmen, the contest upholds the principle of “learning through debate and fostering friendships”. It aims to help first-year debaters quickly adapt to the debating environment and enhance their skills. Through thorough preparation, intense on-stage exchanges, and professional post-debate feedback, the competition effectively promotes the exchange and development of debating culture among Macao’s tertiary institutions.
The contest adopted a single-elimination format, with each participating institution sending a team of four first-year students. As the opposing side, the UM team argued the motion, “The IP phenomenon brings more harm than good to the development of the film and television industry”. They presented in-depth arguments from the perspectives of artistic integrity and the long-term development of the industry, engaging in a spirited and thought-provoking debate with their opponents.
The judging panel consisted of experienced debaters and coaches recommended by the participating institutions. UM appointed PAN LINGZI from the Faculty of Social Sciences (FSS) as one of the adjudicators, providing professional commentary and guidance throughout the competition. Representing UM were four talented freshmen: YUAN BAOQI from FSS and Stanley Ho East Asia College, FANG XIAOYU from Faculty Arts Humanities and Shiu Pong College (SPC), ZHENG RUIJIE from Faculty of Law and SPC, and CHEONG KIN NGAI from Faculty of Science and Technology and Cheong Kun Lun College. The team demonstrated exceptional preparation, showcasing strong logical reasoning and outstanding communication skills, which highlighted the potential of UM’s new generation of debaters.
This contest not only provided UM’s freshmen debaters with valuable practical experience but also strengthened ties and fostered exchanges with debating teams from other Macao institutions. It laid a solid foundation for future high-quality debating events and further collaboration within the Macao debating community.
