FAH-DAD Art and Academic Lecture Series No.18:
1. Mr. Alejandro Guijarro : The Ephemeral Mind —Alejandro Guijarro and the Fragility of Knowledge
Alejandro Guijarro’s photographic practice bridges the realms of art and science, interrogating the relationship between knowledge, memory, and visual representation. Best known for his Momentum series, Guijarro captures life-sized images of chalkboards from prestigious physics institutions, preserving the traces of complex equations and theories that are often ephemeral.
His work blurs the line between documentation and abstraction, as smudges, erasures, and remnants of thought processes become visual landscapes in their own right. This lecture explores Guijarro’s artistic methods, his fascination with the physicality of knowledge, and the ways his photography prompts viewers to reflect on the fragility and transience of human understanding.
We will delve into the philosophical implications of his work, considering how his images challenge the authority of scientific certainty, emphasising the subjective nature of visual interpretation.
2.Robert Platt: Primitive, Magical Unity:on art, embodiment, landscape, and acts of looking
2. Robert Platt:
My artistic practice explores perception, embodiment, and the dissolution of figure-ground relationships through painting, installation, and moving image. My work examines how images resist fixed interpretations, existing instead in states of flux and connection.
Drawing on Deleuze and Guattari’s concept of ‘flickering figure-ground relations’, this approach resists stable forms, favoring shifting perceptions where elements emerge through continuous modulation. I also draw from Gilbert Simondon’s concept of ‘primitive magical unity’, exploring perception as a relational field where distinctions blur.
Through abstraction, fragmentation, and camouflage, these creative explorations erode the separation between viewer and viewed. Transparency and immersive compositions disrupt singular perspectives, positioning my practice as a site of perceptual flux. By emphasizing fluidity and entanglement, I investigate how meaning is reshaped through movement, memory, and collective experience.
