Thrilling Performance by UM Dragon and Lion Dance Team

Dragon and Lion Dance Experience

Dragon and Lion Dance Experience (International students session) was successfully held

The Dragon and Lion Dance Experience (International students session) organized by Office of Sports Affairs (OSA) was held successfully on 26 Mar 2025 at UM Sports Complex (N8). Aimed at promoting the Chinese cultural heritage, the ancient Chinese tradition brought together international students from different backgrounds.

The activity invited the UM Dragon and Lion Dance Team for guidance. Participants not only learned about the background and development of the dragon dance but also had the opportunity to experience both the dragon and lion dances. The activity facilitated cultural exchange, enabling international students and sports team members to interact and deepen their understanding of diverse cultures.

Both the participants enjoyed a lot in the activity with positive feedback. Many students expressed their interest in this traditional art form and joined the sports team training after the activity.

It was so fun to experience the head of the lion and to learn how the mouth and the eyes are controlled. But also to learn about the lion dance history and to understand it’s background. It is a beautiful performance. The coaches and students were very kind and answered every questions I had.

I left the activity wanting to taste more! I am considering joining the UM lion dance team next year. I love history and arts, and I think it is a beautiful way of joining them together. I am truly happy to experience it very closely, I am grateful for the opportunity.

From this activity I’m taking two important things, on one side learning more about the Chinese culture, which as an international student is priceless and basically the aim of my exchange here. The second thing is the realization on how important are sports teams in the university environment. They can provide a very enriched experience in UM. I’m thankful of being able to participate in a part of it.

The most fun was definitely the dragon dance, I think it was very interesting specially since it’s mostly about coordination with the team. You need to be attentive to what your teammates are doing, and be reactive to their movements. I thought it was challenging in a fun way.

Being able to try the costumes and interact a bit with the team members was fun but I would say that the performance was the best part. It was impressive to see how trained people can make the costumes come to live and perform so well. We could see what the lion dance really looks like.

It is always interesting to see people do what they love, practice their passion, and discovering new things, I knew a bit about lion dance of course but it made me discover more in depth that important part of the Chinese culture. Me and my international friends even stayed after the end of the activity to witness the team’s training and discover the dragon dance as well !
