UM Cantonese Debating Team organized Training Camp 2025 Successfully

The Macau University Cantonese Debating Team (CDT) held a two-day orientation camp in Zhuhai from 29 to 30 March. The purpose of this activity is to allow new members to experience a mock formal debate competition and enhance the understanding among team members.

The mock debate competition focused on two major policy issues: “The benefits of working from home outweigh the disadvantages” and “The benefits of introducing a tax on sugary drinks in Macao outweigh the disadvantages”. The first debate was presented by LIANG U PAN of the Faculty of Health Sciences and Cheong Kun Lun College; UN CHI CHON, the Faculty of Business Administration and Cheong Kun Lun College; FONG CHEOK NAM, the Faculty of Social Sciences and Henry Fok Pearl Jubilee College; And the University of Macau Team A composed of VAN HIO IENG from the Faculty of Health Sciences and Chao Kuang Piu College. The opposing team was the University of Macau Team B, consisting of LAI KA SENG of the Faculty of Law and Moon Chun Memorial College; LAM HIO IN of Faculty of Law and Cheong Kun Lun College; PUI SIN MENG, Faculty of Science and Technology and the Chao Kuang Piu College; And IEONG CHI HEI of the Faculty of Education and Lui Che Woo College. SI TOU SIO IAO presented the second debate from the Faculty of Law and Stanley Ho East Asia College; CHEN HOI MENG, the Faculty of Law and the Stanley Ho East Asia College; the University of Macau Tteam C, composed of CHAN WENG CHI from the Faculty of Law and Henry Fok Pearl Jubilee College. The opposing team was the University of Macau Team D, consisting of LEI KAM IN from the Faculty of Science and Technology and Henry Fok Pearl Jubilee College; AO KA FONG, the Faculty of Law and Stanley Ho East Asia College; U WAI WANG, the Faculty of Law and Ma Man Kei and Lo Pak Sam College.

In the first debate, the pros emphasized commuting stress reduction, talent mobility, and family well-being improvement; The opposition exposed the hidden management cost surge and the social atomization crisis, and finally, the opposition the University of Macau Team B won 2:5, and VAN HIO IENG won the best debater with his incisive analysis. The second field advocates that the tax can curb high sugar consumption and translate into medical benefits; The opposing side attacked the policy as hitting small and medium-sized enterprises and increasing the outflow of consumption and proposed to replace it with flexible measures such as nutrition labeling. In the end, the University of Macau Team C narrowly won 7:0, and CHAN WENG CHI was awarded the best debater. The two debates demonstrated the debaters’ ability to combine empirical and humanistic care.
