UM String Orchestra Concert “Across the Centuries” Concert Concludes Successfully
Under the baton of Assistant Conductor Mr. Cheong Wai Leong, the UM String Orchestra presented a magnificent “Across the Centuries” concert last night, bringing the 2024/25 academic year’s campus cultural and artistic events to a perfect close. The concert featured a carefully curated selection of classical repertoire spanning the Baroque to Romantic periods, taking the audience on a 300-year journey through musical history.
The performance opened with Saint-Saëns’ The Swan (Le Cygne), where cello soloist QIU Shirui painted a poetic picture of an elegantly gliding swan with her lyrical playing, accompanied by the strings. This was followed by violin soloist LI Yuanyuan’s heartfelt interpretation of Elgar’s Salut d’Amour, conveying tender emotions through its warm and moving melody. Viola soloist NGOU Man Hei then delivered a brilliant performance of Johann Christian Bach’s Viola Concerto in C Minor (1st Movement), showcasing the refined structure and dramatic tension of Baroque music. Finally, without a conductor, the ensemble flawlessly performed Mozart’s Divertimento in F, capturing the bright and joyful spirit of the Classical period—a testament to the orchestra’s technical mastery and remarkable cohesion across different musical styles.
More than just a display of skill, this concert reflected UM’s commitment to promoting arts and humanities education. Under the professional guidance of Mr. Cheong and the orchestra’s instructors, the musicians impressed the audience with their impeccable technique and harmonious ensemble playing, earning enthusiastic applause. As this academic year’s cultural activities draw to a close, the String Orchestra will continue enriching the campus aesthetic through music and looks forward to presenting more captivating performances in the new academic year.
