UM organises BOC STEM Talent Challenge
The 2024 BOC STEM Talent Challenge, organised by the Centre for Science and Engineering Promotion and the Alumni and Development Office of the University of Macau (UM) and supported by Macao Science Center, held its award ceremony on 3 June. The competition attracted over 250 students and teachers from 15 local schools. A team from Choi Nong Chi Tai School was awarded the first prize for their project on an integrated solar photovoltaic and thermal energy high-efficiency power generation scheme based on the BeiDou Navigation Satellite.
The competition was supported by BOC Macau for the fourth consecutive year. This year’s competition focused on BeiDou Navigation Satellite System technology, with the aim of promoting national scientific and technological advancement, deepening students’ understanding of the country’s development in aerospace technology, and enhancing their sense of national identity. Participants were tasked with using the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System to develop creative and original technological solutions for smart services or products that meet the needs of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Macao.
The selection committee selected 65 entries for the second round of the competition based on their theme, use of technology, innovation, scientific rigour, and practicality. After a rigorous selection process, 1 first prize, 1 second prize, and 8 third prizes were awarded to the most outstanding projects. An exhibition of the winning projects was also held at the event venue, where students could showcase their learning outcomes and present their innovations to guests. In addition, the event featured the launch of the ‘BOC STEM Talent Challenge Portfolio 2021-2023’, which showcases 30 winning projects from previous editions of the competition and highlights students’ innovation and research capabilities.
Several UM representatives attended the award ceremony and presented awards. They were Rui Martins, vice rector; Tam Kam Weng, director of the Centre for Science and Engineering Promotion; and Cindy Lam, director of the Alumni and Development Office.
