Oxford professor gives talk on application of genomics in modern medicine at UM
The University of Macau (UM) held a talk titled ‘Personalised Medicine: Embedding Genomics in the Real World’ today (3 July) as part of its University Lecture Series. Anneke Lucassen, professor of genomic medicine in the Nuffield Department of Medicine at the University of Oxford, was the speaker. During the talk, Prof Lucassen presented examples of clinical practices and discussed how genomic technology can be applied within the healthcare system while fostering a rational understanding of genetics.
In his speech, UM Vice Rector Ge Wei highlighted Prof Lucassen’s international reputation as an authority in the fields of medical genetics and personalised medicine. Prof Lucassen is committed to advancing hereditary disease research and addressing the ethical debates surrounding genomic technologies. Her interdisciplinary research, which spans clinical medicine, molecular biology, and bioethics, has advanced the application of genomics. Prof Lucassen also holds key positions at several institutions in the UK, driving the clinical applications of genomic medicine.
During the talk, Prof Lucassen said that integrating genomic medicine into clinical practice is one of the most transformative developments in modern medicine. She mentioned that her research team focuses on translating scientific breakthroughs in the field into real-world applications that benefit the community. She also shared her experiences of working in hospitals and the Centre for Personalised Medicine, and discussed how genomics can be responsibly integrated into the healthcare system. In addition, Prof Lucassen engaged with the audience during the Q&A and discussion session, which was moderated by Chuxia Deng, dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at UM.
