UM Korfball Experience for International Students

Fostering Cultural Exchange and Promoting Health Through the Game

The Korfball Experience for international students, co-organized by the Office of Sports Affairs (OSA), UMSU Korfball Club and International Students’ Association (ISA), was held successfully on 22 Aug.  The activity attracted 26 international students to participate.

Korfball is a unique mixed-gender team sport that emphasizes gender equality, teamwork, and strategic coordination. The nature of this sport makes it an ideal choice for orientation activities, as it effectively breaks down barriers and allows participants to quickly get to know each other in a relaxed and fun atmosphere.

During the event, participants learned the basic rules and techniques under the guidance of the UMSU Korfball Club members and put them into practice through friendly matches. The atmosphere was filled with laughter and encouragement, not only allowing participants to experience the korfball but also creating a wonderful start to their university life.

The Korfball experience was nothing short of the perfect mix of enlightening and fun. The staff on sight were very engaging and encouraging when getting everyone ready to learn. The atmosphere made everyone feel comfortable and outgoing. Each demonstration of how to play the game was clearly described and adequately prepared all participants to replicate the moves on the spot. The highlight was the final match where all us beginners got to play against each other as if it were a real match.

“Korfball? What’s that? Never heard of it… but I guess I’ll just enroll!”

We arrived a bit late, but the atmosphere was already warm and welcoming thanks to the organizers and the korfball team who looked after us so well.

We started by learning how to shoot, move, defend, attack, and how to combine everything which led to a real match! That was for sure the most exciting part: putting everything you’ve just learned into practice within minutes and getting swept up in team spirit and competitiveness.

I didn’t score a single time… so I’m waiting for my shot at payback!

Firstly, it was so exciting! I have never played korfball. But they kindly teach us how to play it. (It was so hard,,,) And I can make new friends! Playing sports and talking with people give a chance to get along with someone. I will definitely join next event like this!
