UM becomes member of UNESCO Chair network

The University of Macau (UM) and the University of Coimbra held a ceremony to mark UM’s official entry as a member of the network established by the UNESCO Chair on Intercultural Dialogue on Heritages of Portuguese Influence (Patrimónios) at the University of Coimbra. This collaboration not only strengthens UM’s ties with higher education institutions in Portuguese-speaking countries but also injects new momentum into the development of cultural heritage research and international academic exchange in Macao.

During the ceremony, Rui Martins, vice rector of UM, and João Nuno Cruz Matos Calvão da Silva, vice rector of the University of Coimbra, confirmed the collaboration on behalf of their respective institutions. Martins said that the UNESCO Chair project, as an international initiative integrating research, training, and development cooperation, has already established an extensive network of partners. UM’s involvement will further enrich the network’s academic resources and cultural perspectives. He added that the Department of Integrated Resort and Tourism Management in the UM Faculty of Business Administration (FBA) will serve as the project’s execution unit, showcasing its expertise and execution capabilities in cultural heritage research and international cooperation.

UM and the University of Coimbra also exchanged letters of collaboration, expressing their joint commitment to establishing the Luís de Camões Universal Database. This collaboration demonstrates the in-depth cooperation between the two universities in Portuguese cultural studies. The project will create a comprehensive digital platform that will serve as an authoritative reference for Camões research and resources worldwide, while also preserving and promoting the works of this literary giant.

In addition, Walter Rossa, holder of the UNESCO Chair on Intercultural Dialogue on Heritages of Portuguese Influence, delivered a distinguished seminar to students and faculty at UM. During the seminar, he discussed the theoretical, ethical, and political positioning of cultural heritage studies within the UNESCO policy framework. Those in attendance included Yu Jun, dean of FBA; Miao Li, head of the Department of Integrated Resort and Tourism Management in FBA; and João Veloso, head of the Department of Portuguese in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities.

Established by the University of Coimbra in 2018, the UNESCO Chair on Intercultural Dialogue on Heritages of Portuguese Influence (Patrimónios) aims to promote interdisciplinary education and research focused on various forms of cultural heritage, including architecture, art, language, literature, landscape, and urban planning, and explore the diverse cultural outcomes resulting from the influence of Portuguese-speaking cultures.

UM junta‑se à Cátedra UNESCO

A Universidade de Macau (UM) e a Universidade de Coimbra realizaram a cerimónia de adesão à Cátedra UNESCO em Diálogo Intercultural em Patrimónios de Influência Portuguesa, assinalando a entrada formal da UM no projecto da Cátedra UNESCO lançado pela Universidade de Coimbra. Esta colaboração não só reforça os laços da UM com instituições de ensino superior dos países de língua portuguesa (PLP), como também imprime uma nova dinâmica no desenvolvimento da investigação sobre património cultural e na promoção do intercâmbio académico internacional em Macau.

Na cerimónia, esteve presente o Prof. Rui Martins, Vice-Reitor da UM, e o Prof. João Nuno Calvão da Silva, Vice-Reitor da Universidade de Coimbra, para a confirmação da adesão ao projeto. O Prof. Rui Martins salientou que, sendo um projecto internacional que integra investigação, formação e cooperação para o desenvolvimento, esta iniciativa já estabeleceu uma ampla rede de parceiros, e a adesão da UM irá enriquecer ainda mais os recursos académicos e a perspectiva cultural da rede em apreço. O Departamento de Gestão de Resorts Integrados e Turismo da Faculdade de Gestão de Empresas da UM, enquanto entidade executora do projecto, irá demonstrar activamente a sua competência profissional e capacidade de execução nas áreas de investigação sobre património cultural e cooperação internacional.

Ainda nesta ocasião, a UM e a Universidade de Coimbra trocaram cartas de colaboração para apoiar o desenvolvimento conjunto da Base de Dados Digital de Camões, evidenciando uma cooperação aprofundada no domínio dos estudos sobre a cultura de língua portuguesa. Este projecto visa criar uma plataforma digital abrangente, como fonte de referência de autoridade para a investigação e recursos sobre Camões a nível mundial, preservando e promovendo as obras deste gigante da literatura universal.

Adicionalmente, o Coordenador da Cátedra UNESCO em Diálogo Intercultural em Patrimónios de Influência Portuguesa, Prof. Walter Rossa, proferiu uma palestra temática dirigida a docentes e estudantes da UM, na qual abordou, em profundidade, a fundamentação teórica, ética e o significado político da investigação sobre património cultural no quadro das políticas da UNESCO. Entre os presentes na sessão contaram se ainda o Prof. Yu Jun, Director da Faculdade de Gestão de Empresas da UM; a Prof.ª Miao Li, Chefe do Departamento de Gestão de Resorts Integrados e Turismo da Faculdade de Gestão de Empresas; e o Prof. João Veloso, Chefe do Departamento de Português da Faculdade de Letras.

A Cátedra UNESCO em Diálogo Intercultural em Patrimónios de Influência Portuguesa foi instituída pela Universidade de Coimbra em 2018, com o objectivo de promover ensino e investigação interdisciplinares, centrando‑se em formas de património cultural como arquitectura, artes, língua, literatura, paisagem e urbanismo, explorando os resultados multiculturais decorrentes da influência da cultura de língua portuguesa.
