On October 15, 2025, University of Macau Moon Chun Memorial College (MCMC), in collaboration with the University Library, co-organized the “Tresses and Tradition: Hairpin Handcrafting Workshop.”
The event was coordinated by Rachel Zhan, Resident Assistant of MCMC, along with Ms. Fanny Law and Mr. Norman Lo, UM library staff, who guided participants through the process of creating hairpins. After observing an instructional demonstration, students utilized a variety of materials provided to handcraft their own hairpins. Throughout the session, participants actively engaged their creativity, blending personal aesthetic preferences and individual styles with the guidance they received. The workshop concluded successfully, with students producing a diverse and vibrant array of unique hairpin designs.
By encouraging hands-on participation in traditional craftsmanship, this hairpin crafting workshop enriched the college’s cultural life and responded to student interest in creative, hands-on activities. It effectively enhanced participants’ competencies in cultural transmission and innovation, and successfully deepened students’ understanding and appreciation of outstanding traditional Chinese culture.
