From November 1 to 2, Chao Kuang Piu College of the University of Macau organized a two-day educational study tour to Hailing Island, Yangjiang, themed “Exploring the Secrets of Nanhai No. 1 Shipwreck.” The study tour offered participants a unique opportunity to engage in historical and cultural learning while enjoying the region’s natural beauty.
A group of 26 participants visited the Nanhai No. 1 Museum, where they gained in-depth insights into the ancient shipwreck “Nanhai No. 1.” They observed the over-800-year-old sunken vessel and its excavated artifacts up close, experiencing the profound heritage of Chinese maritime civilization and the cultural significance of the Maritime Silk Road.
Beyond historical exploration, the itinerary included a visit to the Yangjiang City Museum, which features a rich collection that systematically showcases the city’s historical development. This helped participants understand the cultural roots of the region and witness its dynamic growth in the context of modern China.
The group also toured the Dongping Daao Ancient Fishing Village, where students walked along old stone paths and immersed themselves in the local fishing culture. Weathered fishing boats, sun-dried seafood, and the authentic local dialect painted a vivid picture of Lingnan coastal life, allowing participants to experience traditional village customs and lifestyles. Through field visits and cultural immersion, students gained a deeper understanding of the historical evolution and cultural continuity of Guangdong’s coastal areas.
Mr. Wong U Kei, non-resident fellow of CKPC and group lead remarked, “We hope that through experiential learning activities like this, students can step outside the classroom to study history and appreciate culture firsthand. Nanhai No. 1 is not only a major discovery in Chinese maritime archaeology but also a vital cultural link between past and present.” As a key part of Macau’s higher education landscape, Chao Kuang Piu College remains committed to providing diverse learning experiences. By organizing cultural study programs, the College aims to broaden students’ horizons and cultivate their cultural literacy and historical awareness.
