IAS & FAH-DAD Lecture: “The Most Ancient and Convincing Example to Refute Racist Theories”: Ethnicity and Cultural Contact in Ancient Egypt

Ancient Egypt has been hailed by a modern scholar of racism as “the most ancient and convincing example to refute racist theories.” From a historical perspective, this lecture will examine issues of ethnicity, cultural interaction, and social identity in ancient Egypt, demonstrating how cultural contact and borrowing contributed to the vitality of Egyptian civilization across technology, literature, and religion. It will also critically assess how modern ideologies from the 19th to the 21st centuries have misappropriated ancient Egypt to support racist theories or cultural appropriation, including National Socialism and Afrocentrism, highlighting the relevance of historical scholarship in understanding contemporary political and cultural discourses.
