On November 18, 2025, the UM Choi Kai Yau College successfully held its first Formal Hall Dinner of the academic year 2025/2026. Led by College Master Prof. Janny LEUNG, the event featured Dr. Roy CHUNG Chi Ping, Awardee of an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Macau, the Gold Bauhinia Star from Hong Kong, and the founder of Techtronic Industries Company, as the Keynote Speaker. The Guests-of-Honor included Prof. Kai Meng MOK, Vice Rector (Student Affairs), Prof. and Mrs. David PONG, Founding Master of Choi Kai Yau College, Prof. CHEUNG Kwok Cheung, Master of Moon Chun Memorial College, and Prof. Stanley HUI Sai Chuen, Master of Henry Fok Pearl Jubilee College. Over two hundred students and fellows participated in this meaningful event, creating a vibrant atmosphere.

The dinner started with the UM anthem and Choi Kai Yau College anthem performed by the CKYC Choir. Following a welcome speech by College Master Janny Leung, Dr. Chung shared his life story: He was born in Macau, where he grew up and spent his childhood with his siblings, with so many memories shared with his friends and classmates during his youthhood. Dr. Chung also showcased a series of precious photos taken years ago in Macau, including a childhood family portrait, a snapshot with friends at what is now One Central Macau, a group photo from his time at Yuet Wah College, and a more recent photo taken in front of the Guia Lighthouse when interviewed as a successful entrepreneur. These images vividly traced his journey of growth and transformation.

Dr. Chung believes in the boundless possibilities of life and takes on life’s challenges head-on. In his teens, he left school and went to Hong Kong to seek a living, starting from a rank-and-file position. Despite the daily struggles, he remained committed to self-improvement, pursuing education at various night schools and institutions, and eventually earning multiple doctoral degrees. As an admired entrepreneur and industrialist, driven by a passion for innovation, he founded Techtronic Industries in the 1980s. With his efforts and dedication year after year, Dr. Chung transformed his business from a small enterprise into a globally renowned manufacturer of home improvement and construction tools, with over ten thousand employees and generating more than ten billions in annual revenue. Dr. Chung is deeply committed to nurturing the next generation. He established the Bright Future Charitable Foundation to give back to society and support young people. He hopes that he can pass on his story from generation to generation to encourage the youth to persevere, stay focused, strive from “good to great” in their studies and work, and always believe in a brighter tomorrow. His inspiring message: turn “Impossible” into “I’m possible”— face the future with courage and confidence.

After the sharing session, Master Leung presented Dr. Chung with a commemorative gift. Subsequently, Founding Master Prof. David Pong was honored with the title of “CKYC Senior Guest Fellow”. The evening concluded with a series of performances, including a graceful Chinese dance titled South of the Rosy Clouds by Student Karina XU, and a harmonious piano and erhu duet You and me by Student Rebecca WANG and Kyson LI, bringing the event to a close amidst thunderous applause. This dinner, featuring a socially impactful entrepreneur sharing his life journey and insightful views, aimed to inspire students to embrace challenges and to stay confident for a bright future.
