Catfishing (Online Romance Scams):
- The “lover” actively approaches the victim through online social media platforms;
- He/She may claim to be a professional, such as an engineer, a pilot, a soldier, or even a member of the royal family;
- He/She will use sweet talks to win the victim’s affection, and gradually develop an online romantic relationship;
- He/She will use various excuses for not being able to meet up in person, but will repeatedly emphasize his/her desire to live with the victim in the future;
- After a while, the “lover” may start borrowing money from the victim, with reasons such as illnesses and financial difficulties;
- Alternatively, he/she may claim to have sent expensive gifts to the victim, and then arrange someone else to impersonate a customs officer or a personnel of the courier, requesting for customs duties or shipping fees;
- In the end, when the “lover” is ghosted, the victim will realize that the romantic relationship is indeed a scam, and the money will never be returned.
