UM professor and students present latest research on economic cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking countries at international conference
Francisco Leandro, associate professor in the Department of Government and Public Administration in the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Macau (UM), and Wang Yinkangni, a PhD student in political science at UM, presented their co-authored paper, Cultivating ‘Guanxi’: The Synergistic Effects of Economic Cooperation and Cultural Engagement in China and Portugal, at the 11th International Conference on Social Sciences and Humanities, where it received positive feedback.
Wang Yinkangni said that she benefited greatly from discussions with other scholars at the conference, and that responding to questions from fellow participants helped her think more deeply about the paper’s arguments. She added that the feedback she received offered clear guidance on how to further strengthen the paper for journal submission.
The paper, Cultivating ‘Guanxi’: The Synergistic Effects of Economic Cooperation and Cultural Engagement in China and Portugal, examines the relationship between China and Portuguese-speaking countries through economic and trade cooperation, with the aim of promoting closer economic and cultural exchanges between the two sides.
Arthur De Diego Garrido Vieira and Zhang Xian, both undergraduate students of Leandro, also attended the conference. Arthur participated in a panel discussion on geopolitical changes and diplomatic strategies, noting that listening to scholars debate international issues gave him a clearer and more concrete understanding of the field. Meanwhile, Zhang said that listening to other scholars’ research presentations encouraged her to think about how to transform her broad academic interests into specific research questions and develop a clear direction for her graduation thesis.
