MCM College: Understanding Autism – From Awareness to Action

The University of Macau’s Moon Chun Memorial College, in collaboration with the Macau Autism Association, held an educational workshop titled “Understanding Autism – From Awareness to Action” on January 28, 2026. The event, which took place in the College Hall, drew close to 100 students and staff members for an afternoon of learning, discussion and practical strategy-building around autism inclusion.
Structured as a 90-minute immersive session, the workshop was facilitated by experienced social worker who provided professional presentations, lived-experience storytelling, and hands-on simulation activities. Participants engaged in exercises designed to mimic the sensory and communication experiences of autistic individuals, offering firsthand insight into daily challenges and strengths.
Interactive segments allowed attendees to practice supportive communication techniques and response strategies in guided scenarios. Through listening to personal accounts from autistic speakers, special education professionals, and caregivers, participants deepened their understanding of learning, social, and adaptive needs within the autistic community.
Dr. Pui Kei Lau, resident fellow of MCM College, emphasized the workshop’s purpose, “By sharing real stories and providing direct experience, we aim to dispel misunderstandings and foster empathy. True understanding inspires meaningful action, and each of us can contribute to a more inclusive society.”
The workshop encouraged participants to move from passive awareness to active allyship, promoting connection over isolation and collective responsibility in building a supportive campus environment.
