The UM Mandarin Debating Team participated at the “Walk with the Constitution and the Basic Law – the 2^nd Chinese Debate Competition for Higher Education Institutions in Macao” and won the Championship and Best Debater

“Walk with the Constitution and the Basic Law – the 2nd Chinese Debate Competition for Higher Education Institutions in Macao” held its final at the Macao Science Centre earlier this month. The UM Mandarin Debating Team won the Championship and the Best Debater at the higher education institution category.

The purpose of the contest was to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the promulgation of the Basic Law of Macao, to deepen the understanding and promotion of the “Constitution” and the “Basic Law” among young people in Macao, to make Macao students pay more attention to national development and social policies, and to improve students’ ability of language organization and logical thinking. The UM Mandarin Debating Team sent for debaters four this contest from the preliminary until the final rounds. They were Wu Jianhao from FLL and CKLC, Hong Bingjing from FED and CKLC, Zhang Yupeng from FAH and CKLC and Lei Junyan from FST.

In the preliminary round, UM debated against the Macau University of Science and Technology on the topic “Should the content generated by artificial intelligence be protected as a work piece?”. UM entered the final with score 8:7. After two weeks of preparation, UM debated against Macao Polytechnic University for the topic “Should revenge be a mitigating circumstance for revenge?” in the final contest. UM scored 15:0 and won the Championship. Lei Junyan from UM won the Best Debater.

Immediately after the final contest, the “Macau Youth Roundtable Conference – Exploration of New Paths to Popularize the Constitution and the Basic Law” was held, chaired by Su Baijing, Secretary of Macao Basic Law Youth Ambassador Promotion Association, and Lok Chan Nei, Program Coordinator of Innovation Social Work, City University of Macau, as the guest speaker. The University of Macau appointed Zhang Yupeng as the student representative to participate in the roundtable. Students from colleges and high schools actively engaged the meeting. Lok believed that the students put forward a lot of innovative opinions in the meeting, which would be inspiring to the future law popularization work, and encouraged students to continue their efforts in fostering the law popularization work.

The event was directed by the Associação de Divulgação da Lei Básica de Macau, the Chinese Debate Association as the consultant unit, Macao Youth Media Association and the Macao Speech & Debate League as the co-organizers, and the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (Macau) Limited Youth Association as the supporting unit.
