Prevention of Dengue Fever and Chikungunya Fever

Dear colleagues and students,
The weather remains unstable recently and continuous rain causes stagnant water on campus, making it easy for mosquitoes to breed. In order to reduce the risk of mosquito-borne diseases, the Health Bureau has published the below information and measures for the prevention of Dengue fever and Chikungunya fever for your reference.
Eliminate stagnant water to prevent mosquito breeding
- Check the surrounding environment at least once per week to ensure stagnant water is regularly removed.
- For hydroponic flowers and plants, replace the water, rinse the roots and scrub the vases thoroughly at least once per week, or close the vase mouth with sponges to prevent mosquitos from laying eggs in the water.
- Avoid using flowerpot saucers.
- Containers prone to stagnant water should be placed upside down.
- Since Aedes Albopictus can lay eggs in a small volume of stagnant water, trash should be sealed and disposed of properly in trash bins with lids.
- Check the waterpipes for leakage and carry out repairs if any; drains should be kept unclogged.
Remove mosquitoes from indoor environments
- Use mosquito repellent equipment if available, such as screen windows, mosquito killer lamps and mosquito coils, to lower the risk of getting mosquito bites indoors.
Take personal preventive measures
- Avoid staying in dark places such as shaded or vegetated areas to prevent being bitten by Aedes albopictus.
- When going out or travelling, wear light-coloured, long-sleeved clothes, and apply mosquito repellent on exposed body parts.
- When travelling, take a rest in places with air conditioners or anti-mosquito facilities.
If you have symptoms of fever, rash, or joint pain, you should not go to work or classes. Seek medical attention and strengthen the above protective measures, and conduct self-health management for 14 days.
For enquires, kindly contact the Health Bureau hotline 2870 0800 or visit the Dengue Fever and Chikungunya Fever Prevention website issued by the Health Bureau.
