MCM College: “MCMC Musicales – Sound of the Five Elements”
滿珍紀念書院:「樂滿滿珍──五行之音實驗音樂會」

University of Macau Moon Chun Memorial College and the Macau Medicine And Food Homology and Mind-body Association co-organized “MCMC Musicales – Sound of the Five Elements” experimental concert. Grounded in the traditional Chinese medical concept of the Five Elements—Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water—the event featured an immersive performance structured into five chapters. Through the interplay of melody and viscera, the audience was guided to experience the qi dynamics of the liver, heart, spleen, lungs, and kidneys, culminating in a state of somatic and psychological equilibrium. The concert represented a pioneering integration of performing arts and Chinese medical wellness in Macao.

The concert was hosted by Nuno Wong, with Dr. Alice Garcia, a practitioner of Chinese medicine, providing explanatory commentary on the Five Elements. A succession of emerging young musicians from the College performed classical repertoire using a diverse array of instruments, including cello, piano, violin, wind instruments, and flute. These musical segments were accompanied by carefully curated visual projections of daily life, creating a dual therapeutic effect on the auditory and visual senses. Additionally, sign language and visual-gestural interpretation were incorporated to accommodate audience members with hearing impairments, rendering rhythm and order not only audible but also visible and tangible. These efforts conveyed the core values of social inclusion and holistic health.

The concert unfolded progressively across five chapters: “Wood – Jue,” corresponding to the free flow of liver qi and the awakening of vital energy; “Fire – Zhi,” releasing warmth and uplifting heart yang and spirit; “Earth – Gong,” conveying stability and tolerance while nourishing the spleen and stomach and calming the mind; “Gold– Shang,” embodying regularity and order to regulate lung qi and facilitate smooth breathing; and finally, “Water – Yu,” which nourishes yin and the kidneys and consolidates energy, drawing the evening to a serene and successful conclusion.

Throughout the concert, the host engaged the audience in interactive dialogue, encouraging participants to appreciate the essence of wellness through the lens of a “musical prescription.” The atmosphere remained both warm and focused.

Moon Chun Memorial College has expressed its commitment to continuing the deep integration of the arts, health, and interdisciplinary learning, and to organizing further events for both students and the broader community that embody a spirit of experimentation and cultural richness.
