Delegation of Technology Enterprises from Portuguese-speaking Countries Visit UM

A delegation formed by representatives of technology enterprises, science parks, and business incubators from Portuguese-speaking countries recently visited the University of Macau (UM) and was warmly received by UM Vice Rectors Rui Martins and Xu Jian. At the University Gallery, Martins gave the guests an introduction to UM’s history, research layout, transfer of research results, and cooperation with Portuguese-speaking countries. According to him, UM will continue to play to its strength as a bridge between Macao and Portuguese-speaking countries to facilitate exchanges and cooperation with Portuguese technology enterprises. The delegation also visited UM’s three state key laboratories, including the State Key Laboratory of Analog and Mixed-Signal VLSI, State Key Laboratory of Internet of Things for Smart City, and State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicine, as well as the Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship. Members of the delegation said that the visit enabled them to learn more about UM’s innovative research results and expressed hope to increase cooperation with the university.

IEEE president shares insights on carbon reduction with UM faculty members and students

Saifur Rahman, president and CEO of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), visited the University of Macau (UM) and exchanged ideas with researchers at the university on disciplinary development. Rahman also gave a talk titled ‘Technologists’ Role in Addressing Climate Sustainability’ as part of the University Lecture Series to explore the importance of carbon reduction to the sustainable development of the environment and how to build a relevant scientific and technological system.

In his welcome speech at the talk, UM Rector Yonghua Song said that UM is committed to promoting research to realise carbon reduction. For instance, UM’s State Key Laboratory of Internet of Things for Smart City has been carrying out studies on theories and technologies that can benefit the integrated energy system of smart cities to achieve low-carbon operation, optimisation, and safety prevention based on the Internet of Things, big data, and artificial intelligence. In addition, UM’s Institute of Applied Physics and Materials Engineering has been conducting research on fundamental theories and technologies for new energy harvesting, high-density energy storage, and carbon dioxide conversion. To build a clean, low-carbon, safe, and efficient smart energy system, UM aims to put forward theories and systems that are of fundamental importance to contribute to smart city development and sustainability, which will also serve the ‘dual carbon’ goal of China and contribute to climate sustainability.

During the talk, Rahman discussed the global objective of achieving carbon reduction and how it requires cooperation between industrialised countries and emerging economies to create a systematic solution that includes advanced low-carbon power generation, energy storage, demand-side management, and energy efficiency improvement technologies. He also stressed the importance of technology practitioners to the promotion of climate sustainability, and shared current and emerging technologies for mitigating and adapting to climate change. The lecture also included a Q&A and discussion session, where the speaker interacted with UM Faculty members, students, and other participants virtually and in person.

After the lecture, Rahman visited UM’s Institute of Applied Physics and Materials Engineering, State Key Laboratory of Internet of Things for Smart City, State Key Laboratory of Analog and Mixed-Signal VLSI, and Centre for Cognitive and Brain Sciences. During the tour, Song gave the guest an introduction of UM’s development history, research layout, campus facilities, and development direction. Rahman spoke highly of the research achievements attained by UM in the fields of smart city and low-carbon energy. He exchanged ideas with researchers at UM on disciplinary development and future planning, and expressed hope to strengthen cooperation with them and jointly contribute to climate sustainability.

IEEE is the world’s largest non-profit professional technical society and plays an important role in international innovation and cooperation in electrical and electronic technology. Rahman is an internationally renowned scientist and academic leader in the fields of energy and power. He currently serves as the president of IEEE, as well as the founding director of the Advanced Research Institute, the Joseph R. Loring Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and the leader of the Center for Energy and the Global Environment at Virginia Tech. In addition, he is an IEEE Life Fellow and a recipient of the IEEE Millennium Medal. He was the president of the IEEE Power and Energy Society (PES) as well as the founding editor-in-chief of IEEE Electrification Magazine and IEEE Transactions on Sustainable Energy.

Chinese Academy of Sciences member Ye Peijian gives talk on China’s space industry

The University of Macau (UM) today (11 May) held a talk titled ‘Promoting the Spirit of Space Exploration and Developing China’s Space Industry’ as part of the University Lecture Series. Ye Peijian, technical advisor and research fellow of the China Academy of Space Technology and member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, was the guest speaker. During the talk, he discussed the spirit of space exploration fostered by practitioners in China’s space industry as well as the country’s outstanding achievements in important areas such as satellite application, manned spaceflights, and deep-space exploration. Combining both virtual and in-person elements, the talk attracted many UM faculty members, students, and members of the general public.

Delegation led by China Association for Science and Technology President Wan Gang visits UM

A delegation from the China Association for Science and Technology, led by its president Wan Gang, recently visited the University of Macau (UM) and was warmly received by UM Rector Yonghua Song and Vice Rector Ge Wei. At the University Gallery, Song gave the guests an introduction to UM’s history, educational characteristics, research layout, and results in science popularisation, and said that the university would nurture more professionals who love Macao and China to contribute to the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. The delegation also visited UM’s State Key Laboratory of Internet of Things for Smart City. Portugal’s consul general in Macao and Hong Kong visits UM

A delegation led by Alexandre Leitão, consul general of Portugal in Macao and Hong Kong, recently visited the University of Macau (UM) and was warmly received by Rector Yonghua Song and Vice Rector Rui Martins. During the visit, Song provided the guests with an overview of UM’s history, latest development, and research accomplishments. He stressed the university’s commitment to promoting international cooperation, particularly with Portuguese-speaking countries, given the strong ties between Macao and Portugal, adding that this exchange and collaboration are central to the university’s internationalisation efforts. Currently, UM enjoys a strong collaborative relationship with several Portuguese universities, spanning academic research and student exchange. The university also initiated several academic alliances between China and Portuguese-speaking countries, such as the Academic Library Alliance between Macao Special Administrative Region (China) and the Portuguese Speaking Countries, and the China-Portuguese Speaking Countries Ocean Research Alliance. In the future, UM will continue to explore and strengthen collaboration with universities in Portugal. Leitão acknowledged UM’s rapid development in recent years and expressed his optimism that the meeting would foster greater exchange and deeper understanding between the two parties and lead to new opportunities for collaboration.

UMSU’s May Fourth Youth Leadership Summit ends

The 25th May Fourth Youth Leadership Summit, which coincided with the 104th anniversary of the May Fourth Movement, has ended. The event was organised by the University of Macau Students’ Union (UMSU). This year’s summit brought together student leaders from higher education institutions in Macao, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, as well as other regions in China. They praised the summit for its significant contribution towards promoting the learning of the spirit of the May Fourth Movement and cultivating patriotism among young adults. During the event, participants discussed various topics, including how young adults can become future leaders to contribute to China’s modernisation, as well as the role of Macao youth in the implementation of the ‘One Country, Two Systems’ policy.

Expert Deng Zhixiong gives talk at UM on a new scientific research method

The University of Macau (UM) today (4 May) held a talk titled ‘The Ingenious Application of the Sum-Difference-Product Principle — A New Scientific Research Method Based on Mathematics’ as part of the University Lecture Series. Deng Zhixiong, former director of the Bureau of Property Right Management and the Bureau of Planning and Development under the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council, was the guest speaker. He shared his insights on the Sum-Difference-Product Principle and discussed its applications as a new research method in social science. The talk attracted many UM faculty members, students, and members of the general public.

Portuguese minister of education shares insight on humanities education with UM faculty and students

The University of Macau (UM) Faculty of Arts and Humanities (FAH) recently held the Macao Humanities Forum. The event featured João Costa, minister of education of Portugal and chair professor of linguistics at NOVA University Lisbon, who delivered a lecture titled ‘Arts and Humanities Education in the 21st Century—The Portugal Experience’. Involving both online and in-person elements, the lecture attracted many faculty members and students.

At the forum, Joaquim Kuong, assistant dean of the FAH, discussed the strong ties and friendship between Macao and Portugal. João Veloso, head of the Department of Portuguese, highlighted Prof Costa’s outstanding contributions to the fields of linguistics and education.

The lecture placed an emphasis on how linguistics can promote arts and humanities education in the 21st century. Prof Costa began by reviewing the new challenges facing the world’s education systems, such as the development of information technology, and giving an overview of current hot topics in education, including climate change. According to him, humanities education must factor in inclusiveness and equity considering the fact that students today come from diverse backgrounds.

From the perspective of the advantage of language awareness in school education, Prof Costa discussed the new insights provided by linguistics to inform decision making in education, and pointed out that linguists play a key role in curriculum design at primary and secondary schools with their strong theoretical foundation. He also talked about how recent approaches to language acquisition can meet the different needs of education systems and explored the future of linguistics studies. After the lecture, faculty members and students, as well as online participants, had an in-depth discussion with the speaker.

The Macao Humanities Forum aims to provide a platform for world-renowned scholars from different humanities fields to share their latest research results with the UM community and local teachers and students. This was the third lecture of the forum in the 2022/2023 academic year.
