MCM College: Camões House Presents – “A Traditional Malaysian Breakfast with Mark”

2025-03-24T00:00:10+08:00

MCM College held a ‘heart-warming’ event on Saturday morning, 22nd February, 2025. Despite the cold and damp weather, Mr. Mark Wong (ELC, College Affiliate), and five enthusiastic student ambassadors from Malaysia, hosted a master-class featuring a vibrant, yet tantalizing Southeast Asian culinary experiential learning journey to students of Camões House, as well as to the international community across the colleges. Mark was eager to point out that breakfast in Malaysia is a unique celebration of cultural diversity, especially embracing traditional elements from Malay, Chinese, Indian, Eurasian, Peranakan, and indigenous traditions.

Mark, together with his student ambassadors, demonstrated just how Malaysian cuisine is best described as “a delightfully infused jewel of cultures, spices, and exotic ingredients” that will surely awaken one’s senses and jolt every taste bud. He explained that a traditional Malaysian breakfast is not simply just about nourishment; rather, it is a cherished ritual that brings families and friends together, cradling the hearts of Malaysians, and evoking a sense of connectivity.

Students tried the traditional Nasi Lemak. A fragrant rice dish, cooked to perfection with coconut milk and pandan leaves, and delightfully accompanied an assortment of sambal, crispy anchovies, peanuts, cucumber, and a hard-boiled egg. It is truly adored by locals. Another quintessential favorite was Kaya Toast and soft-boiled eggs: a luscious combination of thick kaya (coconut jam) slathered on toast, whilst dipped in a runny egg combined with a dash of soy sauce and pepper. A marvelous way to truly kick-start one’s day.

Nasi Lemak, featuring the “otak-otak”, ground fish paste seasoned with spices and wrapped in banana leaf

Malaysian Student Ambassadors with Mark, MCMC Affiliate (from Left to Right): Chong Ai Li, Amanda Wong Xin Ro (CYTC/Communication), Chan Zi Xuan (CYTC/Management), How Chia Yi (CKYC/BIDA), Fayth Yum (LCWC/ Sociology), and Natalie Tan Yin Tong (CKPC/Sociology)

The highlight of the event was a demonstration from Natalie Tan (CKPC), who showed everyone just why Teh Tarik, or Pulled Tea, is a beloved Malaysian beverage known for its creamy, sweet, and smooth texture. Natalie Tan provided the ‘wow factor’ by pouring strong black tea back and forth between two mugs, creating a frothy texture as air is infused into the tea, creating its signature smooth and creamy flavor.

The Malaysian breakfast was a great event in which we could actually experience Malaysia, without physically being there.  In my opinion it was amazing to taste different flavours that we had never previously tried. For instance, the Kaya toast with coconut and egg dip was something that I never thought existed, but those two ingredients paired perfectly. Overall, this event not only brought students from different countries together, but it also made us aware of the various ingredients that can be paired into very tasty dishes.

I liked the authenticity of the cuisine, both otak-otak and sambal were so authentic that cannot be tasted anywhere in Macao. I like working with my fellow Malaysians in preparing our home food, although I did not help much, but I still enjoyed every moment of it. Thank you for making such an interesting event for us fellow Malaysians and other international students as well.

Thanks for this opportunity to try a different kind food. Gathering with Malaysian people and tasting their food was a wonderful experience. I hope to learn more about Malaysian culture and the lovely people in the future!
