On the evening of 20^th April, 2023, Moon Chun Memorial College, University of Macau screened “That Day” and “Beyond the Garden”, produced by the Elderly Service Department and Rehabilitation Service Department of Caritas Macau, written and directed by local Mr. Chi Wan U.  Attendees included College Master, Prof. Kwok-cheung CHEUNG; Centre-in-Charge of Longevity Home Care and Support Service, Ms. Suk Fan LAM; Centre-in-Charge of Caritas Macau Sunshine Center, Ms. Mei I LEONG; Director, Mr. Chi Wan U and Actress, Miss. Lei Tek Sam.

“That Day” is a film that focuses on the issues of the elderly, telling the story of a single-parent daughter taking care of her mother with dementia. The plot offers audience insight into the inner world of a caregiver and her struggles to balance work and family. “Beyond the Garden” tells the story of an elderly grandpa who feels guilty for his granddaughter’s accidental physical disability and is overprotective, but the granddaughter is optimistic and dared to explore the outside world. The plot allows the audience to reflect on whether  obstacles are visible or based on inner mentality that is invisible.

During the post-screening session, Director U shared how to present social issues through short films, and arouse social awareness and reflection on these issues through images. Ms  Lam and Ms Leong also shared the work challenges of frontline elderly services and rehabilitation services, as well as the problems faced by caregivers. After listening to the sharing of frontline workers, participants increased their understanding of the elderly with dementia and the disabled, and also had a better understanding of the elderly and rehabilitation services provided by Caritas Macau.

On the evening of 27th April, 2023, MCM College Interim Master, Professor Kwok-cheung Cheung warmly welcomed distinguished guests, college fellows and affiliates to an informal cocktail reception at Fellows’ Salon. After a light round of social networking, the party proceeded to the Gallery to inaugurate the college’s 10^th anniversary, beginning with the photo exhibition followed by the main event: Valedictory Dinner at College Hall.

In his opening remarks, Prof. Cheung began by looking back at how MCM College began its journey: recounting town & gown connectivity; organising signature events and academic workshops for students; as well as celebrating its achievements and importance of college life. A special greeting from Salzburg, Austria was conveyed via video sharing from former College Master, Prof. Kit Thompson, and Supernumerary Fellow, Dr. Patricia Thompson. This was followed by the keynote speech delivered by Ms. Shirley Chan, representative of the college donor, the late Dr. Chan Sui Kau.

The traditional presentation of “College Blues” by Vice-Rector Prof Mok Kai Meng and College Master Prof Kwok-cheung Cheung to college fellows, affiliates and students for sporting prowess, artistic excellence and distinctive contribution to MCMC, demonstrated this year’s recipients’ aptitude and accomplishment in MCMC events and activities.

Special performances for the evening included a traditional Puíta dance by international students; 《蘭亭序》performed by: Ni Cheng (Erhu) and: Gan Qianwen (Piano); 《劍別》performed: Wu Jiatai; 《想要的一定實現》performed by MCMC Choir –(Lee Chak Ho, Zhang Hanwen, Wong Lei Si, ChenYuqian, Gracinda Guedes Pinto, Lei I Kei, Liu Tsz Ling).

Just before the event came to a close, senior graduands – Zephyr U & Olivia Gan took to the stage to reflect of some touching and memorable moments. Finally, graduands performed  《千千闕歌》with such exuberance, bringing the outstanding event to a close with much enjoyment and merry-making redolent of celebratory student life.

University of Macau Moon Chun Memorial College Music Appreciation workshop invited Professor Chin Pang LEI, Assistant Professor from Department of Communication, as speaker to conclude the series for the academic year.

In the workshop, Prof Lei explored with participants how two Hong Kong pop stars, Anita Mui and Keung To, reflects the different facets of Hong Kong’s culture and history through the social dimension of pop music.

Dubbed as the “daughter of Hong Kong” and is regarded as a Cantopop diva, Prof Lei discussed how Anita Mui embodied the collective nostalgia and memory of Hong Kong people and the influence she symbolized as a social star. Through analyzing Keung To’s music videos, Prof Lei shared with audience how he integrates his personal experiences in his music and resonates with the community.

University of Macau Moon Chun Memorial College fosters students’ growth in various aspects through experiential learning. As part of its mission to promote cultural engagement and encourage service to the community, College Resident Fellow, Dr. Peggy Lau, and a group of college students have started the Music Teaching and Learning project to teach piano to local elders. Dr. Lau organized the project as part of the college’s community service program, the initiative aims to engage students in meaningful service activities that benefit the community and promote personal growth. Together, the group prepared a curriculum designed to teach basic piano techniques and theory in an accessible and engaging manner to elders each week. During the process, the program not only enhanced students’ cultural engagement, service and leadership skills, but also intergenerational communication. It provides students with the opportunity to give back to the community while developing their skills as musicians and educators. Music has the power to bring people together, and the connections were made during the process, especially evident in the mini concert held in the last week of the program, where each elder performed two pieces together with their teachers and expressed their gratitude to their piano teachers with small gifts – food and drink.

With the venue support from Ngai Chon Center of the General Union of Neighbourhood Associations of Macau, the program was a success, with both the students and the elders benefiting from the experience. The students gained a deeper understanding of the importance of community service and the value of music education, while the elders enjoyed learning a new skill and interacting with young people.

There have been an increasing number of fraud cases in Macao recently.  To enhance the awareness of scam call prevention, Moon Chun Memorial College, University of Macau was delighted to invite Dr. Elvo Sou, Head of Student Counselling Section and College Affiliate, Dr. Chio Keong CHIN (FLL) to conduct a seminar on 19^th April, 2023.

Firstly, Dr. Sou explained the different forms of fraud through case sharing and personal experience.  He also analyzed the “fear” characteristics of victims from a psychological perspective.  Secondly, Dr. Chin explained the consequences of information fraud crimes and handling methods from a legal perspective.  Lastly, the participants shared their thoughts on this issue and asked questions to the speakers.

Food is a bridge for people from different countries and nationalities to establish friendship.  On 22^nd April 2023, Moon Chun Memorial College, University of Macau and International Student Association of UM jointly organised “International Food Culture Night”. Students from Brazil, Angola, Vietnam and Malaysia gathered in MCM College’s Master Dining Room. Everyone first worked in groups to make their favorite hometown delicacies, and then presented them while chatting to each other. During the activity, the students established new friendships and learned about the preparation and other information about those delicious dishes.
