On the evening of 9^th March, 2023, Moon Chun Memorial College, University of Macau screened “Father’s Mountain”, a documentary produced by Dream Sail Association. Attendees included Prof. Kwok-cheung CHEUNG, College Master; Mr Wai Lok WONG, consultant of Dream Sail Association, Mr Chi Wan U, Director; Mr Iok Leng WONG, a character in the documentary. In his opening speech, Prof. Cheung hoped that students will remember history, understand more about the contributions made by veterans to the country, and enhance their spirit of loving our country and Macao.

 “Father’s Mountain” is based on the life of Pan Kun WONG, a retired veteran living in Macao, and his son Iok Leng WONG, so as to recall his active participation in the War of Resistance Against Japan when he was young, witnessing the rise of new China today.  During the post-screening sharing session, Mr Iok Leng WONG showed the audience his father’s medals of honor and expressed his appreciation for his father’s heroic deeds in defending his family and country. Director Yu said that loving one’s country is not just talking about it, but actually loving the people around us, loving our father, loving our hometown, and embracing our memories… Finally, the event ended with the playing of  “Ode to Heroes”, which fully expressed respect and love for warfighters.  The day after the event, Mr Pan Kun WONG died of illness at the age of 95. Here, on behalf of all students and staff, MCM College would like to pay tribute to this heroic warrior.

On 8^th March, 2023, Moon Chun Memorial College, University of Macau was pleased to invite Dr. Elvo Sou, Head of Student Counselling Section to hold a career exploration workshop.  In that workshop, Dr. Sou emphasized the importance of knowing thyself in career planning.  Participants explored their personality traits, career values, motivated skills and career interests through Personal Style Inventory (PSI) and card games.  Finally, the participants completed their Career Development Profile which served as a GPS to help them navigate towards their career goals.

To provide insights for students to further integrate themselves into the national and regional development of the Guangdong-Macao In-depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin, promote Macao’s economic diversity, and the practice of “one country, two systems”, University of Macau Ma Man Kei and Lo Pak Sam College (MLC), Moon Chun Memorial College (MCMC) and Macao Youth Federation co-organized a study trip to the Guangdong-Macao In-depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin on March 15, 2023. The delegation led by Dr. Gary Fung and Dr. Stanley Chan, Associate Master and Resident Fellow of MLC, and Dr. Peggy Lau, Resident Fellow of MCMC, visited sites that showcased the strategic planning and development in the areas of urban planning, entrepreneurship, traditional Chinese medicine and technology, providing students with a better understanding on the economic development, entrepreneurship opportunities and the living environment of Hengqin.

On 10^th March, 2023, Premier School Affiliated to Hou Kong Middle School arranged a group of 25 Form 6 students to experience a day of college life at Moon Chun Memorial College, University of Macau.  The group began with a tour of MCM College, followed by experiential learning workshops such as “Portuguese for Beginners” and “Music and Rhythm” conducted by Dr. Manuel Noronha and Dr. Peggy Lau respectively.  Shortly after, three senior college student representatives were invited to highlight their respective college experiences with the group as they interacted actively in group discussions. At the end of the morning session, Associate Master, Dr. Manuel Noronha presented certificates of participation to the group.

After lunch at College Hall, the group visited Macao Base for Primary & Secondary STEM Education, followed by a guided visit to Centre for Cognitive and Brain Sciences by Prof. Ruey-Song HUANG, and Prof. Haoyun ZHANG. The visits aroused the group’s interest in scientific research.  Afterwards, the group attended a guided tour to UM Gallery.  Finally, they visited the Centre for Chinese and Culture, and attended a seminar held by Dr. Neng Ian CHEANG.

On 3^rd March, 2023, Moon Chun Memorial College, University of Macau organised a Pour-Over Coffee Experience Workshop in collaboration with Cocktail and Coffee Learning Society of UMSU.  The instructor, Brian Tam introduced the basic knowledge of coffee, including its history, origin, variety and roasting process. This workshop was quite hands on, with the instructor demonstrating the pour-over brewing method, as well as offering tips and tricks for getting the best out of the brew.  Participants were given opportunities to make their own cup of coffee.  Everyone enjoyed a wonderful night together.

2022-23 CICA Music Festival was successfully held at the University Hall (N2 U-Hall) on Wednesday, March 1st, 2023. As one of the signature CICA events, the music festival features a diverse range of musical talents from students of the 10 residential colleges and stands as the highlight of cultural life on campus.

This year, CICA Music Festival “Remix CD” was jointly hosted by Moon Chun Memorial College and Ma Man Kei and Lo Pak Sam College. With the support from the College bands across 10 RCs and the dance teams of the Mainland Student Union Dance Department and MLC, the festival attracted a large audience of music lovers and fellow students who enjoyed an evening of stunning performances and lively atmosphere.

“Remix CD” CICA music festival not only provided a platform for students to showcase their vitality and creativity, but also offered an opportunity for them to interact with each other and establish friendships across RCs. It was an unforgettable cultural feast that celebrates talents and comradeship that will not be easily forgotten.

On Sunday morning, 5^th March 2023, staff, fellows and students of Moon Chun Memorial College, University of Macau organised a trip to a quaint part of Coloane – Village of Our Lady. The Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows is located in Ka Ho Village, which lies on the southernmost tip of the island, and where residents continue to enjoy the solitude of its simple, yet historical local culture. Although the idyllic historical architecture is beautifully restored, it was once a leprosarium for patients suffering from leprosy.

Initially in the late 1880s, the former Portuguese government constructed one or two housing facilities. However, by the 1930s, the facility was rebuilt which included five new residential houses, and the Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows was completed in 1966. It served mainly as a safe haven for the settlers at Ka Ho village. They became a small catholic minority, some learned to read and write, and eventually becoming followers themselves. The site served as a village for leprosy patients from 1930 to the late 1990s.

University of Macau, Moon Chun Memorial College is honored to have invited Dr Sir Billy C. Chan KGOR to share with students about a humanitarian issue – world peace. Currently the Director of the Center of Education in Medical Education at Macau University of Science and Technology, Dr Sir Billy C. Chan KGOR is also the Vice Chairman of AustCham and the Chairman of the Board of the Sino-Phil Asia International Peace Awards Foundation, INC. in his pro-bono life.

The Sino Phil Peace Foundation addresses the diverse issues human society is encountering in the 21st century. As the chairman of the Sino Phil Peace Foundation, Dr Sir Billy C. Chan KGOR responded to the increasing number of natural disasters and social crises by implementing and supporting a variety of charity programs and projects. As a Peace Award giving body in Asia, together, they strive to strengthen cooperation at all levels between the Philippines and Cambodia, and to effectively promote peace activities and cultural exchanges.

During the workshop, Dr Sir Billy C. Chan KGOR inspired students with the motto by Dr Jose Rizal, “Non Omnis Moriar” (I will not altogether die and a great part of me will live beyond death), the legacy of giving will pass on as the candle of love to all mankind, exceeding races, is lit among us.

On 26 February 2023, Moon Chun Memorial College, University of Macau organised a cultural excursion for members of St. Paul’s House – to rediscover Pátio do Espinho, better known as Macau’s ancient ‘Walled City of Thorns’ with a history dating back nearly four centuries.

We met our guide, Mr. Ip Tat, President of the Na Tcha Temple Association, who graciously welcomed college members at the gateway of the former locale where Japanese Catholics congregated and resided within close proximity to the Church of Saint Paul (Ruins of Saint Paul in today’s context).

Mr. Ip explained that during the 17^th century, Pátio do Espinho was known as Hing Seng Lane. It was a safe haven for fleeing Japanese Catholics (in fear of persecution in Japan) to settle in Macau. Plantation of potatoes for subsistence within the walls, gave rise to the name “Chi Lam Wai” or Potato Field Lane. Mr. Ip added that the restoration of Church of Saint Paul was completed for the third time, with the help of many Japanese hired by the Society of Jesus. However, in 1835 fire had ravaged the church leaving behind its facade and a few retaining walls. This forced the Japanese living in Pátio do Espinho to move away.

Pátio do Espinho is the only existing walled village in Macao, and it has been included on the list of the Cultural Heritage of Macao by the Government. It is highly considered an integral element of tourism of the Ruins of Saint Paul.

On 19 February 2023, 18 students and academic staff from Moon Chun Memorial  College, University of Macau set off at 4:30 pm on a sunset-hiking excursion to Coloane Seac Min Pun Ancient Path.  It was a great place to enjoy a beautiful sunset.  However, the sun was obscured by clouds that day, and while participants were not able to capture perfect sunset through their cameras, they did manage to enjoy an incredibly tranquil hiking and healthy lifestyle, and the beautiful scenery along the trail.
