This visit marks the first exchange activity since both Colleges signed an MOU in April this year. The exchange program aims to create a cross-disciplinary, cross-regional exchange platform for the all-round education of the students of the two Colleges and primarily focuses on exploring the smart and green transformation of urban transportation in Shanghai and Macau, which may contribute to the development of smarter and more sustainable urban transportation systems.

On the first morning in Shanghai, the guide led all participants to visit Tongji University’s History Museum. As one of China’s oldest higher education institutions, Tongji University has nurtured many outstanding alumni who have significantly contributed to the country’s modernization over the past century. In the afternoon, students participated in ice-breaking games to strengthen their friendship. At the opening ceremony in Guohao College’s conference hall, representatives from both Colleges delivered speeches and exchanged souvenirs. Subsequently, all participants attended a seminar about smart transportation in Shanghai by Professor Liu Chenglong from Tongji University’s School of Transportation Engineering. The next day, participants visited the Transportation laboratory at Tongji University’s Jiading campus, experiencing various transportation simulation systems firsthand, including advanced automatic driving simulators, smart traffic management systems, and vehicle-road coordination technologies, enhancing their understanding of smart transportation. On the third day, participants visited the Shanghai Museum and Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Center, gaining in-depth knowledge of Shanghai’s history and the city’s planning process and future development blueprint, providing valuable references and insights for future research topics.

After concluding activities in Shanghai, staff and students from both colleges travelled to Macau for the next phase of the program. On the first day in Macau, students from both colleges were divided into four groups to visit Macau by public buses, light rail, taxis, and the hotel-courtesy shuttle buses, experiencing firsthand the differences in urban transportation between Shanghai and Macau. The next day, participants visited the University of Macau’s State Key Laboratory of Internet of Things for Smart City (IOTSC) and attended a seminar on smart transportation by Master Janny Leung from Choi Kai Yau College. In the afternoon, they also visited the UM campus and Lui Che Woo College.

On the final day of the program, students from both Colleges presented their group research reports. After conducting in-depth research on the status and differences in urban transportation between Shanghai and Macau, each group proposed solutions for specific issues in smart transportation in both cities. Professor Janny Leung, Master of CKYC and Professor Li Zhenning from IOTSC served as judges for the presentations. Two judges evaluated the four groups’ presentations based on progress and achievements, significance and contributions, project innovations, and presentation skills. The judges highly praised the students and awarded certificates of participation to all students.

Reflecting on their time together, students from both Colleges valued the experience of learning together and the investigation of the sustainable development of urban transportation resources in Shanghai and Macau. As they explored the unique historical and cultural heritage of both places, they also forged deep friendships.

Choi Kai Yau College visited No.2 Primary School in Xiushui County, Jiangxi Province for volunteer teaching

2024-08-05T00:00:05+08:00

On June 16–26, 2024, a group of eleven students and one staff member from Choi Kai Yau College (CKYC) of the University of Macau (UM) volunteered to teach at Xiushui County No. 2 Primary School in Jiangxi Province. As part of this volunteer teaching program, college students taught the pupils in the daytime as well as participated in team reflections in the evening. They actively discussed pedagogy and content, encouraged each other, and continuously improved their methods. UM students also engaged with the teachers at the No.2 primary school, enhancing their understanding of pupils and maximising the impact of their teaching.

During PE classes, students taught the children how to form lines and jump rope, which improved their teamwork and coordination. Through art classes, students taught children how to make intricate origami maple leaves and colorful fluid bears that foster their artistic creativity. In music classes, students taught children to play the recorder. The final day’s performances showcased the students’ learning achievements and joyful spirits, with melodies like “Jingle Bells” and “Ode to Joy” echoing through the campus.

In addition to teaching subjects, University of Macau students meticulously prepared presentations on Macau’s history, geography, and local customs. They introduced the children to various aspects of Macau and patiently answered their questions, planting seeds of curiosity about the wider world.

After the final talent show, students and teachers from Xiushui County No. 2 Primary School held a heartfelt farewell ceremony for the University of Macau volunteers. The children made their own greeting cards and flowers. The primary school teachers also delivered sincere and moving speeches, expressing gratitude for UM students’ knowledge and joy. This compassionate journey not only opened doors to knowledge for the children but also built bridges of friendship between students from different regions. Several expressed their hope that education and spreading this love would continue.

The leading staff of the group, non-resident fellow of CKYC and professor of ICMS, Zheng Ying, said: “Xiushui County, Jiangxi Province is a designated target for Macau’s assistance. I hope that in the future, Macao will have an increased number of capable and caring students, teachers, and social forces to continue volunteer teaching and other activities over there.”

Lam Tai Man, a freshman from the volunteer teaching team, reflected, ‘Two weeks may be short, but a lifetime is long. Although we couldn’t impart all knowledge in two weeks, we aimed to instill reverence and enthusiasm for learning. While two weeks can’t change a person’s entire life, we aim to ignite courage and perseverance in pursuing dreams. Education’s essence lies in one tree swaying another, one cloud propelling another, and one soul awakening another. May we all become gentle breezes, stirring more dormant hearts.’

Wang Yuhuan, another freshman, shared, ‘During this time, I felt compelled to make up for regrets from my own student days. I wanted to fulfill the requests I once made as an unnoticed student and become the kind of teacher I admired. Two weeks may be brief, but I hope to bring joy and music to these children.’

Zhao Yushi, a junior, reflected on the deep connections she formed with the children in just ten days. Teaching and learning came hand in hand, and volunteering enhanced her personal abilities. Even after just one class, the children remembered our names and greeted us enthusiastically every day.”

During the study tour, participants from the three universities visited seven cities in the region – in sequence, Shenzhen, Dongguan, Guangzhou, Zhongshan, Zhuhai, Macau and Hong Kong – attending different lectures and seminars. They visited urban planning exhibitions and history museums in Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao to understand the urban development and cultural history of the Greater Bay Area; industry-leading enterprises such as Huawei, BYD and BGI to deeply explore innovative technological development in the “Silicon Delta”; and renowned universities such as the University of Macau, the two CUHK campuses in Hong Kong and Shenzhen, and Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou for in-depth exchanges with local teachers and students.

The students and teachers from the three colleges remarked that the study tour was a wonderful opportunity for them to learn about the rapid and booming development of the Greater Bay Area, and to personally experience the tightly interconnected nature of the GBA cities, enabling them to not only gain a comprehensive understanding of the present situation and future prospects for regional development but also enhance the interaction and collaboration among members of the three universities in Shenzhen, Hong Kong and Macao. It will inspire them to be actively engaged in making important contributions to the coordinated development of the Greater Bay Area in the future.

The study tour was sponsored by a renowned patriotic entrepreneur Mr. Lo Foo Cheung. He has paid close attention to the GBA’s regional development, and has been actively engaged in the economic and industrial development of our country. Mr. Lo aimed to enable more and more students to learn about the GBA and broaden their horizons through immersive city tours and interactions that offer opportunities for exchange; and at the same time to enhance their mutual understanding and cultivate friendships, nurturing a fresh force for the GBA’s development in the future.

“The Development of City and Culture Exchange Program” Culminates with Dynamic Inter-Collegiate Exchange at Choi Kai Yau College

2024-03-31T00:00:20+08:00

In a pioneering initiative aimed at fostering deeper connections between academia and cultural understanding, Choi Kai Yau College at the University of Macau successfully hosted the concluding session of this year’s “The Development of City and Culture Exchange Program”. From January 15th to 19th, the event brought together students and staff from prestigious institutions across the mainland, marking a significant milestone in the program’s history.

Launched in October 2018, the collaborative exchange program saw the inception of a unique partnership among Fengru College of Beihang University, Meng Xiancheng College of East China Normal University and Choi Kai Yau College of University of Macau. This collaboration was further strengthened in the spring of 2019 with the addition of Chongshi College of Xi’an Jiaotong University, culminating in a comprehensive four-college alliance. The initiative has been designed to promote cultural exchanges across the diverse geographic landscape of the nation, aptly named the “Four Seasons, Four Colleges Exchange Program.” This program underscores the commitment to exploring the rich tapestry of China’s cultural heritage through seasonal visits to each partnering college.

A pivotal moment of the program was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on January 16th, signifying the commitment to a focused project on The Development of City and Culture Exchange Program “encompassing Beijing, Shanghai, Xi’an, and Macau”. This ceremony not only marked the commencement of a new phase in the collaboration but also highlighted the participating colleges’ dedication to cultivating a nurturing environment for educational excellence and cultural exchange.

Throughout the five-day exchange, participants were immersed in a series of activities designed to enhance their understanding of Macau’s unique cultural landscape. They toured the University of Macau’s facilities, including cutting-edge research labs, as well as the university library and gallery, offering insights into the UMRC’s whole person educational philosophy. The program also included hands-on environmental conservation efforts and explorations of Macau’s historical sites, allowing students to connect with the locale’s rich heritage and contemporary challenges.

The exchange culminated in a vibrant New Year celebration, uniting participants in a festive acknowledgment of the Chinese New Year of the Dragon. This event served not only as a cultural exchange but also as a celebration of the friendships and connections forged throughout the program. The poignant farewell, underscored by a collective performance of “gān bēi shí wǒ huì xiǎng qǐ nǐ” symbolized the participants’ hope for future reunions and continued collaboration.

This initiative underscores the importance of inter-collegiate exchanges in enhancing students’ educational experiences, fostering a deeper understanding of cultural diversity, and building lasting international relationships. As the program looks toward its next phase, the participating colleges remain committed to expanding these opportunities, further bridging the gap between cultural heritage and academic exploration.
