Dear colleagues and students,
The latest issue of e-version My UM (Apr issue) is available!
UM features a diverse academic environment. Here, professors not only strive to advance their fields through research, but also actively integrate their research findings and experiences into the classroom to enhance student learning. This article in Feature Stories explores how three professors from different disciplines weave research into teaching and use real-world case studies to help students grasp complex ideas, share practical strategies to improve teaching effectiveness, and cultivate scholarship through the analysis of academic papers, demonstrating the benefits of integrating research and teaching (Click here for the article).
At UM, a ponytail wearing British professor adeptly merges academic research with his passion for music. By day, as a scholar devoted to tourism research, he is dressed impeccably in a suit, giving lectures in the FBA building where sunlight streams through the windows. At the podium, he captivates his students with insightful and enthusiastic analyses of the latest trends in travel and tourism. By night, he transforms into the heartbeat of a band, taking his place at the back of the stage where he plays the drums and cymbals with infectious energy. This UM scholar is Prof Glenn McCartney, associate dean of FBA and associate professor in the Department of Integrated Resort and Tourism Management. We interviewed him in this People’s Stories article (Click here for the article).
In another People’s Stories article, we interviewed Dr Vénus Viana, resident fellow in MLC. Vénus combines her deep historical insights with her professional nutrition knowledge to offer a distinct perspective on the daily dining scenes in the college dining hall. At MLC, the dining tables become platforms where Vénus engages students in discussions about nutrition, using recipes as her teaching materials. Under her guidance and interpretation, students’ dietary choices transform into a cross-temporal and cross-cultural dialogue (Click here for the article).
