Computational Social Sciences Workshop: Risk Reallocation, Financialization, and Household Debt in China

Speaker: Prof. Lu ZHENG (鄭路教授), Associate Professor of Sociology, Founding Director of the Center for Society and Finance, Volkswagen Visiting Chair in Sustainability at Schwarzman College, Tsinghua University
Date: 11/4/2025 (Fri)
Time: 13:30 – 15:00
Venue: E4-G051
Language: English

Abstract:

Debt has been mounting across all sectors in China, including government, corporate, and household debt. This talk focuses on the issue of household debt against the backdrop of financialization, economic downturns, and labor market instability. To examine this issue, I propose a theoretical framework called social risk reallocation theory, which captures the growing trend of social risks being increasingly shifted from the state/government and the market/corporations onto the shoulders of ordinary citizens and workers. These social risks include uncertainties and costs related to education, employment, healthcare, and old-age pensions. The accumulation of debt by individuals and households is a response to—and a result of—this risk reallocation process. Drawing on multiple data sources—including government statistics, national survey datasets, a survey of past-due debtors, proprietary company data, and in-depth interviews—I present preliminary findings on household debt trends, composition, distribution across social groups, and the social and psychological consequences of indebtedness. I also explore how individuals trapped in deep debt perceive and navigate their circumstances. The consequences of indebtedness are further complicated by factors such as familism, social networks, debt collection practices, and the broader financial ecosystem. The talk concludes with a discussion of the policy implications of this research project.

Computational Social Sciences Workshop: A Comparison of Classical and Counterfactual Approaches to Mediation Analysis

Speaker: Prof. Shawn BAULDRY, Professor, Department of Sociology, Purdue University, USA
Date: 3/4/2025 (Thu)
Time: 13:30 – 15:00
Venue: E2-G012
Language: English

Abstract:

This talk examines the evolution and current state of mediation analysis in social and behavioral science research. Beginning with the classical approach popularized by Baron and Kenny (1986), I illustrate through simulation studies how unaddressed confounders, omitted mediators, and misspecified relationships between mediators can produce substantial bias in estimates of indirect effects. I then discuss causal mediation analysis that draws on a counterfactual framework based on insights from directed acyclic graphs (DAGs) and potential outcomes. I illustrate how controlled direct effects, natural direct effects, and natural indirect effects offer more refined estimands for understanding causal mechanisms, particularly when interaction effects are present. Throughout, I emphasize the importance of careful consideration of model specification for valid inference in mediation analysis.

Abstract:

The current paper is an exploratory study about foreign pseudohistory, which is a special kind of conspiracy theory that has important influence across developing countries, such as China. The current study analyzed 302 videos about foreign pseudohistory from a popular Chinese video-sharing website (Bilibili) and found 213 videos supporting foreign pseudohistory and 89 videos opposing foreign pseudohistory. Videos opposing foreign pseudohistory attract more viewers and comments than videos supporting foreign pseudohistory, but the latter videos attract fans with high stickiness. The inductive thematic analysis identified three major themes from these videos, including 1) how foreign civilizations and history were based on fabrication and plagiarism; 2) promoting foreign pseudohistory as a way to fight against Western-centrism; and 3) refuting and mocking foreign pseudohistory and enlightening the public about the real history. The further implications of this study, such as how to use the commenter-interaction data for echo chamber studies, will also be discussed.”

Abstract:

We develop a model to explore the conditions under which domestic information policy causes global media bias. When information flows freely, reputation-concerned independent media counterbalance state influence over public perceptions. However, when access to independent media is restricted, it can lead to increased regulation of domestic media and encourage independent media to misreport to international audiences. Our results highlight the essential role of open information channels in maintaining balanced global reporting.
