Students from UM and East China Normal University join study trip to Shanghai and Macao

To promote exchanges between universities in Macao and Shanghai and foster patriotism among students, Chao Kuang Piu College (CKPC) of the University of Macau (UM) and Meng Xiancheng College of East China Normal University (ECNU) jointly organised the summer exchange programme ‘Urban and Cultural Development: Focusing on Shanghai and Macao’. A total of 20 students from the two colleges visited Shanghai and Macao to conduct field studies.

This is the seventh edition of the exchange programme between CKPC and Meng Xiancheng College. Over the years of cooperation, students and faculty members from both colleges have developed deep friendships, strengthening the ties between universities in Macao and Shanghai. During the programme, college masters and teachers from both colleges shared their experiences in whole-person education and discussed measures and ways to improve college education. Participating UM students said that the exchange programme allowed them to experience Shanghai’s culture first-hand, broaden their horizons, and develop friendships with students from Meng Xiancheng College.

Macao and Shanghai share deep cultural ties and are among the first cities in China to showcase a mix of Chinese and Western influences. Under the theme ‘Shanghai and Macao: Exploring the Colourful Journey of Culture’, faculty members from Meng Xiancheng College led the students to visit Zhujiajiao Ancient Town, as well as the University History Museum, the Historical Relics Museum and the Ancient Coins Museum at ECNU’s Putuo campus.

To explore the cultural characteristics of Shanghai, students from the two colleges were divided into five teams to conduct field studies on the city’s nature, technology, humanities, geography, and culture and creativity. They visited the Memorial Hall of the League of Left-wing Writers, M50 Creative Park, Rockbund Art Museum, Pudong Urban Planning and Public Art Center, Shanghai Library, and the Site of the First National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party, where they gained a better understanding of Shanghai’s unique historical and cultural heritage and experienced local customs. The students also visited local communities to introduce primary school students in Wujing Town to the cultural heritage, food, urban landscape, and customs of both Shanghai and Macao, through which they learned about the importance of serving the community and the spirit of mutual support.

For the trip to Macao, CKPC invited Yu Jiannan, president of the Macau Youth Tea Culture Promotion Association, to introduce the basic knowledge of tea and China’s contribution to tea culture, and teach the participants how to brew tea. The students from Meng Xiancheng College also visited Macao’s famous landmarks, including the Ruins of St Paul’s, the ‘Leal Senado’ Building, the Holy House of Mercy, Senado Square, and the Handover Gifts Museum of Macao. They also visited the exhibition ‘Focus: Integration of Art between China and the West in the 18th-19th Centuries’ at the Macao Museum of Art, and the photo exhibition ‘Uniting for Progress on a New Journey—25th Anniversary of Supply of Agricultural Food Products from the Mainland to Macao’ at the IAM Gallery, where they learned about the unique combination of Chinese and Western cultures in Macao and the national support for Macao’s development.
