【Career Development Centre of Student Affairs Office】 Further Study Insider (14): Why you might want to do a Master’s before a PhD

2023-05-04T00:00:19+08:00

Why you might want to do a Master's before a PhD

The choice between a PhD and a Master’s degree is becoming increasingly popular for people who want to enter academia. However, for some students, this is a crossroads: “Do I need a Master’s to get a PhD?”, “What is the difference and which is the better choice?”

The purpose of this article is to remind you of the reasons why you might want to do a Master’s before a PhD. After reading it, we hope that you will have a clearer idea of which route to take.

  • A Master’s degree will help you determine the need for a PhD

A Master’s degree is generally short and serves as an introduction to postgraduate study, allowing students to explore new fields and more specialized areas. In comparison, a PhD is more time-consuming and requires more commitment, so doing a Master’s might make you question the value of a PhD, as sometimes the fields or topics might not be as interesting and appealing as you thought and might be overwhelming.

  • Better chances of getting admitted

An undergraduate degree gives you more general knowledge, while a Master’s degree gives you at least one to two years of experience that can be applied to your potential doctoral research. As a result, many graduate schools prefer applicants with a Master’s degree, and this is a good idea if you want to improve your academic performance after your undergraduate degree.

  • Speed up the doctoral process

Did you know that in some countries, such as the USA and Canada, Master’s degree credits were offered that were transferable to a PhD? The flexible credits have allowed scholars to complete their PhDs more quickly, giving students a pulse for a definitive research topic before embarking on the PhD journey and gathering sufficient information and knowledge about their PhD.

Finally, it is always a good idea to ask for advice, whether from your tutors, future alumni or anyone else who knows the field. Getting personalized suggestions will give you a better idea of what your PhD course is like, and remember, there’s no penalty for asking questions, so don’t miss out!

【Career Development Centre of Student Affairs Office】 Further Study Insider (13): Should I do a Master’s degree immediately after graduating?

2023-04-17T00:00:56+08:00

Should I do a Master's degree immediately after graduating?

A Master’s degree gives you in-depth knowledge of your field and makes you more competitive when you are looking for a job. If you have plans for further study, you may need to consider when a Master’s is right for you.

Overall, the choice of when to study a Master’s program should be made after careful consideration.

【Career Development Centre of Student Affairs Office】 Further Study Insider (12): Application Mistakes to Avoid When Applying for Postgraduate Programmes

2023-04-03T00:00:40+08:00

Application Mistakes to Avoid When Applying for Postgraduate Programmes

In order to determine who is the “lucky” applicant, universities have always followed several procedures to help them select the best candidates from hundreds of excellent applicants. In today’s article, we have summarised four important tips that may help you to know more about how to prepare for a “good application”.

  • Choose Your Targets Wisely

After considering everything from university rankings to the academic atmosphere, it is easy for students to forget that they are the main protagonists in the application process. Don’t forget to analyze both your strengths and weaknesses before making your wishlist. Be selective about the programme that can best maximize your strengths.

  •  Spend Time Reviewing Admission Requirements

Once you have completed your wish list, it is time to check the entry requirements. Do they have minimum IELTS, TOEFL, GRE or GMAT scores? Do they offer early application rounds, which may be more advantageous? Give yourself plenty of time to research programmes and you will be less stressed during the application season.

  • Personalize Your Materials, Show Who You Are

To make your application more personal, make sure your experience is relevant to what each university is looking for. Instead of brainstorming another fancy word to put in your personal statement, think deeply about your unique achievement first and what makes you different from the other people in the same application pool.

  • Resume and Letter of Recommendation Matter

Resume and letter of recommendation show who you are beyond the numbers on your transcript. As the first glimpse of your overall profile, your resume should be short, concise and in line with the application requirements. As for the letter of recommendation, these more objective documents give the admissions committee a better understanding of you. Not to mention the importance of finding the right recommender who knows you well and can truly speak about you, especially if they have a higher reputation in a particular field.

The admissions committee is looking for students who have the potential to succeed in their studies. Therefore, the admission application is a mutual selection between you and the university, be patient and authentic and you will eventually find your destination. Good luck!
