Chao Kuang Piu College and the Macau Down Syndrome Association Working Closely Together

2024-01-01T00:00:12+08:00

Chao Kuang Piu College’s Down Syndrome Buddy Group was established in 2020. Every semester, the group holds a series of cooperative activities with the Macau Down Syndrome Association, with the aim of bringing warmth and companionship to the families with children born with Down syndrome. This semester, the volunteers of the group organized three activities.

In September, the volunteers taught the children and their parents to make snowflake crisps and chocolate cookies, let them experience and learn the steps of making desserts, and finally pack the baked products. The children had a chance to work hands-on and learn to be patient, and all participants experienced the fun of baking together. During the 8th Vegetarian Food Festival, the Association sold the finished products made by the children and the volunteers. The snowflake crisps was a big hit with both the public and the children’s parents.

In October, the volunteers brought interesting, fun and interactive board games to the Association. The games included Body Twister, Card Flip, Stick Stack, etc. The volunteers and the children played together. After each game, the volunteers would invite the children to look at some pictures and tell stories and share their feelings. Through sharing, the children’s ability of expression was cultivated and the volunteers got to know them better. They all had fun.

For the last interaction in this semester in November, the volunteers brought clay materials from the College brand “Nebula Studio” and coffee grounds from “Infinite Coffee”. Under the guidance of the volunteers, the children mixed the clay and coffee grounds, then pinched them into their favorite patterns or shapes, painted them with colors, and finally made them into decorative magnets. This activity not only helped develop the children’s fine motor skills, but also increased everyone’s interest in art creation.

CKPC’s Down Syndrome Buddy Group is looking forward to future cooperation with the Association. Volunteers have already started planning and preparing for next semester’s activities and look forward to sharing more new ideas and interesting activities with the children. The Group also looks forward to cooperation with other College brands in working for the better well-being of the children from the Association.

CKPC World Café – social media around the world

2024-01-04T00:00:13+08:00

To promote communication and exchange of ideas among students, including international and exchange students, CKPC holds a series of World Café sessions.  The World Café is a group activity designed to create a friendly and welcoming environment to connect multiple ideas and perspectives on a topic. The table host engages participants in several rounds of conversation, collecting and sharing their inputs as “Graphic Recording” along the way. Participants also exchange ideas during the short tea breaks, which keep the flow of discussion and sharing throughout.

In the third session of this semester, students from different cultural backgrounds took part in several rounds of stimulating conversations on social media and their influence on the world’s youngsters.  The participants used Tik Tok (which is the international version of the Chinese App Douyin) as the primary example for the conversations.

Most students used Tik Tok/Douyin for viewing short videos as a form of entertainment and for sharing videos and feelings with friends.  They typically used it for short periods of time, ranging from half an hour per day to a couple times per week.  Most have used it for 4 to 6 years.  They also kept their identity anonymous via aliases in such social medium platforms.

As to why such social media became so successful, students suggested the following:

  • The videos were short compared to Youtube or Bilibili, making it easier to scroll through large number of contents
  • The software kept feeding users with stimulating videos so they became kind of addictive to it
  • Based on a user’s usage profile, the software used certain AI techniques to suggest large number of interesting videos
  • Some users produced many popular videos and earned money that way

The students discussed the impacts of such social media.  On the positive side,

  • It was an effective way to disseminate information to many people. For example, users have used them to help find lost children
  • Users might raise awareness on social issues or even influence people’s views.
  • There were educational contents, allowing users to learn at their leisure time

On the negative side:

  • Often it was a waste of time scrolling through many entertainment videos
  • One could not tell whether the information was fake. Furthermore, certain inappropriate contents might mess up teenager’s minds.
  • Strangers could send messages to you, which might lead to fraud

Students also suggested that social media platforms should bear certain social responsibilities.  For example, they should block inappropriate contents, performed fact checking when reported by users, and reminded users to take a break after certain usage time.  They didn’t agree to banning of TikTok by certain countries because they thought that those countries should educate their people instead of directly banning it. Besides, they disagreed to real-name system for using it since they believed users can hide their identity and other private information.

During the World Café session, the participants shared their ideas and feelings through engaging conversations.  At the final presentation, students from each table used the “Graphic Recording” to report on their findings.  They all found the activity very stimulating and rewarding.

CKPC Aerospace, History, and Culture Study Tour

2023-12-29T00:00:12+08:00

In mid-November, CKPC organized a study tour to the Zhuhai Aerospace Land, the battlefield of the Yamen naval battle between the Song and Yuan Dynasties, and Doumen’s old street.

The study tour has broadened student’s scientific and technological knowledge, enhanced their cultivation on history and culture, and stimulated their affection for the motherland. The students also deeply felt the interaction of the past and present, and the integration of culture and technology. They all found the event very meaningful and educational.

“SDGs Game 2030: The Final Team-building activity in this semester for Student Leaders of CKPC” organized by the Chao Kuang Piu College of the University of Macau, was successfully concluded on November 22, 2023. A total of 25 student leaders participated in this meaningful event, which aimed to summarize the activities of the previous semester and enhance team cohesion. The student leaders demonstrated great energy this year, actively serving and supporting the students of the college.

This event has invited Ruby, the founding president of the Macau Food and Environmental Health Association, to bring a board game called “SDGs Game 2030.” The “2030 Sustainable Development Goals” (SDGs) were announced by the United Nations in 2015, consisting of 17 core goals, including 169 sub-targets and 230 indicators, guiding global collective efforts towards sustainability. Through simulations of various economic, promotional, and consumption activities, it showcases a possible world in 2030.

After Ruby introduced the SDGs and the game rules, each group immediately began playing the game. Each group had its own strategies and tactics, with some choosing to play as bankers and acquiring necessary resources by investing in others’ projects, while others traded money for time after completing a project to achieve personal goals. The game was lively and filled with discussions and negotiations. Some groups had planned approaches to achieve individual goals, while others faced challenges of resource scarcity and finding opportunities. Nevertheless, everyone participated in the game in their own busy ways, just like in real life.

Soon, the first half of the game concluded. The host provided a summary, allowing each group to share their strategies and insights from the game. Many participants expressed that they became aware of the importance of the Sustainable Development Goals during the game and started contemplating how they could contribute to achieving these goals in real life. They discussed topics such as waste reduction, promoting clean energy usage, and improving education and health.

In the second half, Ruby presented challenges that confronted participants with more difficulties and obstacles that could arise in real life, such as natural disasters and economic recessions. These challenges further emphasized the importance of sustainable development and stimulated participants’ creativity and collaborative spirit in seeking solutions. Throughout the entire activity, participants experienced the significance of teamwork through the game. They had to cooperate, communicate, and coordinate with each other to achieve common goals. After the game, a summary and reflection session took place where everyone shared their experiences and lessons learned from the activity.

The successful organization of “SDGs Game 2030: The Final Team-building for Student Leaders of CKPC”, not only strengthened the cohesion and cooperation among the student leaders but also increased their awareness and understanding of the Sustainable Development Goals. This activity provided them with a practical platform for hands-on experience, enabling them to better address the challenges of global sustainable development in their future leadership roles.
