The activity included rock climbing and giant’s ladder, etc. Students demonstrated their courage and team spirit. This activity provided a unique opportunity for the students to relax under pressure, to grow and learn, and to strengthen the friendship and interaction. CKPC Students Experience the Artisan Spirit – Woodworking Experience Workshop

2023-12-16T00:00:12+08:00

In a quiet backstreet in downtown Macau, there is a store called “Zawood”, which displays unique wooden products and furniture. Next to the shop is the workhouse.

In addition to the handicraft experience, CKPC’s Entrepreneurship Series aims to inspire students by allowing them to get to know and understand young entrepreneurs in Macao’s unique industries, and to listen to their stories of entrepreneurship. Before the start of the experience, Dave, the person in charge of Zawood, told the students that because his father and grandfather were both engaged in carpentry, he had learned from the experience and decided to quit his original IT design job to start his entrepreneurial journey. The road to entrepreneurship has not been easy, from the start of business in 2012, Zawood has been operating through the sale of woodworking products. 2017, through the design of unique wood products, the scale of business was expanded, with a part for design and retail stores. In 2020 since the outbreak of the epidemic in Macao, Zawood’s business is getting worse. It was at this time when Dave decided to make changes. In addition to the sale of wood products, he started on hosting woodworking experience workshops, which has become one prominent part of the business today. Dave shared his experience with the students. “Don’t give up especially when you are doing something you are really passionate about. As long as you persevere, God will not treat you too badly and will not let you lose,” he said.

After the sharing, the students started to experience woodworking. The wood used in this workshop was cut from red wine crates. Dave hopes to arouse people’s awareness for environmental protection, and it is also a kind of appreciation for natural materials. The students took about three hours to complete the exquisite and unique toolbox by selecting the wood, cutting and shaping, piercing and nailing, sanding and polishing. In addition to professional woodworking skills, familiarity and experience in using tools, patience and concentration are also essential in making a woodworking craft. Although the process of making a woodwork is tiring, focusing on the craft and entering the world of woodworking allowed the participants to forget their worries for a while and to relax. The moment they saw the finished products, they felt a great sense of achievement and satisfaction. The woodworking workshop was a unique experience for the students, who not only received unique crafts, but also gained insights from the owner’s experience.

Note: Chao Kuang Piu College has also organized other activities on “Getting to know about Entrepreneurship”, such as jewelry making experience and blacksmithing experience, which are popular among students.

Chao Kuang Piu College High Table Dinner – Ant-Man’s Endeavor

2023-11-24T00:01:09+08:00

Chao Kuang Piu College hosted its first high table dinner for Academic Year 2023/2024.  The theme was “Ant-Man’s Endeavor”, with Professor Danny Chi-Man Leong, Assistant professor of United International College as the keynote speaker.

Professor Leong is an ecologist, physiologist and insect taxonomist. He is committed to science education, scientific research and discovery. In 2018, he discovered a new ant species called the Macau Tiny Ant.  In 2021, due to this discovery and his active involvement in scientific promotion, he was selected as a National Geographic Emerging Explorer.

He shared his experience in scientific research, from the study on entomology to the unexpected discovery of a new ant species. He encouraged young people to step out of their comfort zones, explore bravely, and pursue their dreams.

As a Macau native working in Zhuhai, he joked that he was like a “panda” being observed by everyone around him. This year, he was awarded a project on ecological environment management and standard setting in Hengqin. In the new horizon of the Greater Bay Area, he feels there is more room for him to grow.

Professor Leong has been engaged in popular science education for a long time. He suggested that students should start from the needs of the community and make unremitting efforts, and there will be unexpected gains.

Other guests at the dinner included Ms. Ruby O, Founder & Chairperson of the Society of Food and Environmental Health of Macao, and Mr. Joe Chen, Vice Chairman of the Macau Ecological Society.  Student representatives from United International College also jointed the dinner and interacted with college students.

The evening ended with a music, magic and CKpopC dance performance that pushed the atmosphere to a climax. After the party, the students lingered and took pictures in front of the backdrop.

CKPC’s World Café – a multicultural conversation

2023-10-28T00:00:08+08:00

To promote communication and exchange of ideas among students, including international and exchange students, CKPC holds a series of World Café sessions.  In the second session this week, students from different cultural backgrounds sat together and took part in several rounds of stimulating conversations.

The topic this week was “Communicating with Parents”, a topic with literally tons of ideas for participants to share.  Several international students volunteered to be table hosts, who are responsible for taking notes on the ideas and thoughts of other participants.

In the first round, participants briefly shared their family situation, some facts about communicating with parents, and what their parents are like.

In the second round, they mainly identified issues on communicating with parents, tried to account for such problems in terms of values, different education backgrounds, etc., and also brainstormed some possible solutions.

In the final round, participants looked to the future by reflecting on what they would like to tell their parents that they have never told them before, and how they will be different when they become parents someday.

Some notable ideas emerged from the conversations were:

  • Asian and non-Asian families differ markedly in the intensity of parental control and the frequency with which they express their love for one another (especially out loud).
  • Some students thought that their parents just followed what their grandparents did back in the old days and didn’t really understand or listen to them.
  • Students, especially Chinese students, hoped that their parents would give them more choices, respect their decisions, and allow them to do what they want.
  • Most students said that when they become parents, they will give their children more space and resources.

The participants were excited to share their ideas and feelings through engaging conversations. Since they had a lot to talk about or even “complain about,” they continued the discussion even after the designated rounds or during snack times. The room was filled with laughter and joy.

The students said that they liked the World Café atmosphere because it gave them the opportunity to learn about other people’s thoughts and to express their own.  They are all looking forward to next month’s session, which focuses on the phenomenal social media Tik Tok (Douyin).
