The University of Macau won championship in the Cantonese Youth Category of the debating competition for three consecutive years
The University of Macau Cantonese Debating Team recently secured the championship in the Cantonese Youth Division of the 2025 “Courtesy in Daily Life Charter” Youth Student Debating Competition, themed “Respecting Life, Protecting the Environment.” This marks the third consecutive year that UM has won this category. Team members Lo Chong Him and U Wai Wang respectively received the Best Debater awards in the preliminary and final rounds.
Organised by the Municipal Affairs Bureau, co-organised by the Student Union of Macau City University, and hosted by the Debating and Speech Culture Association of Macao, the competition aims to provide a platform for local youth and students to engage in academic exchange, share insights, and enhance their language and critical thinking skills. Through debating, participants deepened their understanding of courteous living, recognised the importance of respecting life and protecting the environment, strengthened their interest in civic engagement, cultivated daily etiquette and ethical conduct, and reflected on the future direction of Macao’s public policy. The initiative encourages young people to actively participate in societal development and to help pass on China’s distinguished tradition of etiquette. The competition features three categories: Cantonese Youth, Mandarin, and Cantonese Junior Group. In the Cantonese Youth Category, teams from the University of Macau, Macau University of Science and Technology, Macau Polytechnic University, the Asian Law Students’ Association, and a University Students’ Alliance competed.
In the preliminary round, the University of Macau defeated the University Students’ Alliance team by 5-0, advancing to the final against the Asian Law Students’ Association, winners of the other preliminary match. The final debate topic was “Economic support for disadvantaged communities: the benefits outweigh the drawbacks for sustainable development.” Representing UM were Chief Debater Ao Ka Fong (Faculty of Law and Stanley Ho East Asia College, Year 2), First Deputy Pui Sin Meng (Faculty of Science and Technology and Chao Kuang Piu College, Year 2), Second Deputy Lei Kam In (Faculty of Science and Technology and Henry Fok Pearl Jubilee College, Year 3), and Closing Speaker U Wai Wang (Faculty of Law and Ma Man Kei and Lo Pak Sam College, Year 2).
