UM rector attends China Southern Power Grid International Technology Forum and delivers keynote speech on technological innovation for carbon neutrality

The 19th China Southern Power Grid International Technology Forum was held today (13 October) in Guangzhou. At the forum, more than 100 experts in energy and power discussed the advancement of carbon neutral power and energy systems driven by digitalisation and green development, and shared their insights on the latest policies, theories, and technological innovations in the field. Yonghua Song, rector of the University of Macau (UM), attended the forum and delivered a keynote speech. He discussed the latest policy strategies adopted by the UK, EU, and other international communities in areas such as climate change, carbon policy mechanism, zero-carbon energy system transformation, digitalisation of energy system, as well as the relevant progress in technological innovation. He also highlighted UM’s efforts in carbon-neutral technological innovation and introduced the research projects conducted by the State Key Laboratory of Internet of Things for Smart City, the Zhuhai UM Science & Technology Research Institute, and the China Southern Power Grid – University of Macau Joint Laboratory of Smart Power and Energy for Carbon Neutrality.

Deputy Commissioner Sun Xiangyang of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of PRC in Macao visits UM

Sun Xiangyang, deputy commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China in the Macao SAR, led young diplomats to visit the University of Macau (UM) to learn about the university’s development and achievements. Accompanied by UM Vice Rector Rui Martins, Director of the Global Affairs Office Wang Ruibing, and University Librarian Wu Jianzhong, the delegation visited the Rare Collection Room, the UM Scholars Collection, the Portuguese Corner, the Digital Scholarship Space, and the Museum of Art. The two parties also held discussions and exchanged ideas. Sun fully acknowledges UM’s work to promote cultural exchange between China and Portuguese-speaking countries and research innovation. He hopes that the university will play a more active role in the development of Macao as a platform between China and Portuguese-speaking countries.

President of Institution of Engineering and Technology visits UM

Bob Cryan, president of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), led a delegation to visit the University of Macau (UM). The delegation met with UM Rector Yonghua Song and Vice Rector Rui Martins to learn more about the university’s developments and its achievements in research and education. The two parties also held in-depth discussions and exchanges on topics such as strengthening research collaboration, academic exchanges, and journal publication. In addition, the delegation visited the University Gallery, the State Key Laboratory of Internet of Things for Smart City, and the State Key Laboratory of Analog and Mixed-Signal VLSI to learn about the history and development of UM, as well as the university’s efforts in the sustainable development of smart cities and the development of microelectronics. Three ancient books from UM’s collection included in GBA National Rare Ancient Book Directory

Three ancient books from the rare collection of the University of Macau (UM) library have been selected by the Centre for Preservation and Conservation of Ancient Books of Sun Yat-sen Library of Guangdong Province to be included in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area National Rare Ancient Book Directory. The three items were donated to the university library by Ho Yin, then chairman of the University Council of the University of East Asia, the predecessor of UM. In 2010, the State Council and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism included them in the second National Rare Ancient Book Directory. The three ancient books, all of which are block books printed in the Ming dynasty, are well preserved and in excellent condition, and are of considerable significance to the study of history and documentation science. To cater for the research needs of experts and scholars and to promote traditional Chinese culture to the general public, UM library has digitised the three block books and dozens of Chinese and Western ancient books. These valuable resources are now available on the UM library website.

UM rector attends University Alliance of the Silk Road Forum and visits universities in Xi’an

Yonghua Song, rector of the University of Macau (UM), attended the University Alliance of the Silk Road Forum 2023, where presidents, experts, and scholars from 55 universities around the world discussed the development and innovation of higher education in the context of the new technological revolution. In his speech titled ‘Talent Cultivation Innovation of Higher Education in the Digital Era’, Song shared his views on the changes and future development of higher education in the context of the digital era, as well as UM’s exploratory and practical experiences.

In addition, Song led a delegation to visit Xi’an Jiaotong University and Northwestern Polytechnical University. At Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU), the UM delegation met and exchanged views with Wang Shuguo, president of XJTU. The two sides agreed to strengthen cooperation in student exchange, the Ten Thousand Talent Programme, and college activities, and explore cooperation opportunities in various disciplines, especially in engineering. During their visit to Northwestern Polytechnical University (NPU), the UM delegation was warmly received by Song Baowei, president of NPU. The two sides had in-depth discussions on strengthening academic exchanges and research collaboration in engineering.

UM to hold China and Portuguese-speaking Countries Ocean Research and Education Symposium

The University of Macau (UM) will hold the 2nd China and Portuguese-speaking Countries Ocean Research and Education Symposium on 12 and 13 October. The symposium, which aims to strengthen cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking countries and promote integrated development, will bring together renowned ocean experts from China, Portugal, Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, and other countries and regions to discuss cutting-edge science, innovative theories and technologies in ocean science and technology.

Ocean resources are crucial for human survival and development. China and Portuguese-speaking countries, which are all coastal countries, share the challenges of protecting ocean ecosystems and ensuring ocean safety. Under the theme ‘Ocean Health and Safety’, experts will share the latest developments, theories, and technologies regarding issues such as the impacts of climate change, sustainable development, the blue economy, marine innovation, and ocean governance.

In recent years, UM has placed greater emphasis on ocean research and designated regional ocean research as one of three key development areas in its research layout. The university established the Centre for Regional Oceans in 2020 and the Department of Ocean Science and Technology in 2022. It has also launched postgraduate programmes to nurture talent and meet Macao’s development needs. In addition, the university has a long history of research collaboration with Portuguese-speaking institutions. The China-Portuguese Speaking Countries Ocean Research Alliance, initiated by UM, is dedicated to fostering research exchanges and cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking countries by bringing together the research strengths and resources of its members in the field of ocean science.

2.º Fórum de Investigação e Ensino Oceânicos entre a China e os Países de Língua Portuguesa

Para reforçar a cooperação entre a China e os países de língua portuguesa e promover o desenvolvimento integrado, a Universidade de Macau (UM) irá realizar o “2.º Fórum de Investigação e Ensino Oceânicos entre a China e os Países de Língua Portuguesa”, de 12 a 13 de Outubro. Especialistas de renome na área de investigação oceânica da China, Portugal, Brasil, Angola, Moçambique e outros locais discutirão ciência de ponta, teorias e tecnologias inovadoras na área oceanográfica.

Os recursos oceânicos são de vital importância para a sobrevivência e o desenvolvimento humano. Enquanto países costeiros, a China e os países lusófonos enfrentam desafios comuns na protecção da ecologia dos oceanos e na garantia da segurança marítima. O tema deste simpósio é “Saúde e Segurança dos Oceanos”. Os especialistas irão partilhar os mais recentes progressos, teorias e tecnologias sobre questões relacionadas com os impactos das alterações climáticas, o desenvolvimento sustentável, a economia azul, a inovação e a governação dos oceanos.

Nos últimos anos, a UM deu prioridade à investigação oceânica e definiu a investigação oceânica regional como uma das três principais áreas estratégicas de desenvolvimento. Criou o Centro para os Oceanos Regionais em 2020 e o Departamento de Ciência e Tecnologia Oceânica em 2022 para cultivar talentos e apoiar as necessidades de desenvolvimento de Macau. Além disso, a UM tem uma longa história de cooperação científica com instituições de língua portuguesa. A Aliança de Investigação Oceânica China-Países de Língua Portuguesa foi criada por iniciativa da UM, reunindo os pontos fortes de investigação e as vantagens de recursos das instituições membros na ciência oceânica para promover o intercâmbio de investigação e a cooperação entre a China e os países de língua portuguesa em áreas relacionadas.

Congratulations to UM student Cheang Pei Lok on winning silver at Asian Games

Cheang Pei Lok, a student at the University of Macau (UM), and his teammates from the Macao team won a silver medal in the men’s team kata event in the 19th Asian Games held in Hangzhou. UM expressed congratulations to the athlete on his excellent performance in the games. Cheang was admitted to the university through UM Principals’ Recommended Admission Scheme for Outstanding Student-Athletes. He is currently a first-year student in business intelligence and data analytics in the Faculty of Business Administration and a member of Henry Fok Pearl Jubilee College. Yonghua Song, rector of UM, said that Cheang’s achievement is the pride of UM and the glory of Macao, adding that the university places great emphasis on students’ holistic development and will continue to encourage students’ participation in various sports and support sports science research.

UM’s research projects receive grants from National Natural Science Foundation of China

The National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) recently announced the result of grant applications for 2023. Researchers at the University of Macau (UM) received grants for their research projects in various fields, including materials science, financial technology, nanomedicine, Chinese medicine, integrated circuits, environmental engineering, and economics. Among the applications submitted by UM, one project received a grant from the Excellent Young Scientists Fund (Hong Kong and Macao) and 11 from the Young Scientists Fund. Among the applications submitted by the Zhuhai UM Science & Technology Research Institute (ZUMRI), three projects received grants from NSFC’s General Program and two from the Young Scientists Fund.

Sun Pengzhan, assistant professor at UM’s Institute of Applied Physics and Materials Engineering, was awarded a grant from the Excellent Young Scientists Fund (Hong Kong and Macao). He is also the only scholar in Macao to receive the grant this year. Scholars who submitted applications through UM and received grants from the Young Scientists Fund included Yang Endong, assistant professor in the Faculty of Business Administration; Tao Yubo, assistant professor in the Faculty of Social Sciences; Peng Yatao, assistant professor at the Institute of Microelectronics; Li Rihui, assistant professor at the Institute of Collaborative Innovation; Zhang Kaile, research assistant professor at the Institute of Collaborative Innovation; Qian Guangsheng, research assistant professor in the Faculty of Science and Technology; Zhou Liqiang and Shao Fangyuan, research assistant professors in the Faculty of Health Sciences; Guan Zheng, research assistant professors in the State Key Laboratory of Internet of Things for Smart City; and Feng Ruibing and Li Guodong, research assistant professors at the Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences. In addition, among the applications submitted by ZUMRI, Yang Yibai, associate professor in the Faculty of Social Sciences, and Luo Li and Cai Zhongya, assistant professors in the Faculty of Science and Technology, received grants from NSFC’s General Program; while postdoctoral fellows Wan Qian and Lou Yaying received grants from the Young Scientists Fund.

In recent years, the university has launched several schemes under the UM Talent Programme, including the UM Research Assistant Professor scheme, the UM Postdoctoral Fellow scheme, and the UM Macao Fellow scheme. The schemes have attracted a number of young scholars to join the university to conduct academic research. Currently, 12 scholars at UM have been awarded grants from the Excellent Young Scientists Fund (Hong Kong and Macao), and UM’s application success rate for the Young Scientists Fund has reached 50 per cent for two consecutive years.

UM showcases 18 research projects at Macau Industrial Products Show

The 9th Macau Industrial Products Show kicked off today (29 September) at Macau Fisherman’s Wharf and will run until 2 October. A total of 18 research projects developed and incubated by the University of Macau (UM) are showcased at the fair, attracting great interest from guests and demonstrating the university’s recent achievements in research innovation and the commercialisation of research results. During the fair, Ho Iat Seng, chief executive of the Macao SAR, accompanied by Yonghua Song, rector of UM, paid a visit to UM’s booth at the MinM Macao Industrial Complex to learn about the university’s latest development in research innovation. The research projects presented by UM at the fair cover the areas of health, and innovative technology and lifestyle. Of these, 11 were developed by the university and seven were developed by four companies incubated by the university.

First held in 1981, the Macau Industrial Products Show is Macao’s oldest and largest industrial exhibition. This year, the MinM Macao Industrial Complex was set up to showcase Macao’s high-tech development and local universities’ achievements in scientific research and industrial design to the younger generation and the general public.

Award ceremony for outstanding young entrepreneurs in GBA held in three places

The 4th Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Outstanding Young Entrepreneur Award Ceremony, organised by the Guangdong-HK-Macao Bay Area Entrepreneurs Union, was held today (27 September) at the branch venues in Hong Kong, Shenzhen, and Macao. The Macao branch venue is located at the University of Macau (UM). At the event, awards were presented to 100 young entrepreneurs who have made outstanding contributions to the development of the Greater Bay Area, of which 14 are from Macao, including six UM alumni. More than 3,000 people, including both in-person and online attendees, participated in the award ceremony.

Speaking at the event, Lei Wai Nong, secretary for economy and finance of the Macao SAR, said that the award ceremony aims to recognise the achievements of young entrepreneurs and demonstrates that the market in the Greater Bay Area is thriving. He added that the country’s efforts to promote economic recovery and transformation will bring new business opportunities and new forms and modes of business and create a favourable environment for entrepreneurs.

Following a rigorous and independent selection process by academic institutions and experts, 14 young entrepreneurs from Macao were selected for five award categories. Among them, six are UM alumni—Cheong Ka Wo, co-founder of Macau E&M Holding Limited and Kento Engineering Co Ltd, was awarded the Outstanding Young Entrepreneur Award; Jorge Valente, chief executive officer of Cang Shi Commercial Enterprise (Group) Company Limited and chairman of H.C. Group (Macau) Limited, was awarded the Outstanding Young Entrepreneur Award; Ng Hong Kei, executive director of BoardWare Information System Limited, was awarded the Outstanding Young Entrepreneur Award; Ng Wai Kuan, executive director of Macau Cultural & Creative Integrated Services Centre Company Limited, was awarded the Best Cultural Creativity Project; Lo King Hang, senior vice president of Melco Resorts & Entertainment and general manager of Altira Macau & Mocha Clubs, was awarded the Best Commercial Service Provider; and Ni Jingyun, founder and chairman of Macau Chiherbal Health Technology Company Limited and Aoyeas Health and Science Co Ltd, was awarded the Best Entrepreneurship Project.
