On November 12th, the student leaders of the Ma Man Kei and Lo Pak Sam College (MLC) visited and toured the historical site and cultural area of the Lai Chi Vun Shipyard in order to gain a deeper understanding of Macau’s shipbuilding industry history and experience the historical imprint of the Lai Chi Vun Village in Coloane. According to historical records, Lai Chi Vun Village has existed since the 1850s. Lai Chi Vun, formerly known as Lai Chi Wan, is located in the southwest of Coloane, on the right bank of the Cross Gate Waterway, facing Hengqin across the water. The name Lai Chi Vun Village derives from the fact that lychee trees were once grown in the village, and the shape of the bay resembles a bowl. In the early days of the village’s establishment, the villagers lived in makeshift shelters, but over time, different types of housing such as wooden houses, tin houses, and brick houses were developed. In the past, the villagers of Lai Chi Vun engaged in fishing, oyster farming, and stone quarrying. As early as the first half of the 20th century, a shipyard was established in the village, bearing witness to the development of Macau’s shipbuilding industry. However, by the late 20th century, Macau’s shipbuilding industry declined due to competition from domestic counterparts and the decline of the fishing industry, leading to the closure of the shipyards in Lai Chi Vun Village.

Lai Chi Vun Village holds rich historical significance, witnessing the development of the city of Macau and the shipbuilding industry of that time. In order to review the village’s history, the Cultural Affairs Bureau has specially organized the “Moments in History: The Story of Lai Chi Vun Village” exhibition, which is divided into three main sections: “Story of Ships,” “Craftsmanship and Boat Art,” and “Memory and Boat Heritage.” Through this exhibition, it is hoped that the public can gain an understanding of the vicissitudes of Lai Chi Vun Village.

Walking in the World: MLCers Shared International Cultural Exchange Experiences

2023-12-14T00:01:09+08:00

In order to help students appreciate the atmosphere of overseas cultures and further strengthen their global competitiveness, on the afternoon of November 8, MLC held an “International Cultural Exchange Experience” sharing session. The event specially invited two undergraduates from the 2022 class, Mr. Chuqi CUI and Ms. Yuhan LU, to share their international cultural exchange experiences.

Mr. CUI, with the topic “Teaching Talk: My Experience with Ceylon-Sri Lanka”, first talked about his teaching activities in Sri Lanka. While teaching English, Mr. Cui often used his free time to tell the children about Chinese humanities and history. “Before leaving, the children expressed their longing and aspirations for China in farewell notes they wrote to me.” Although it has been a long time since he finished teaching, Mr. Cui is still concerned about his students in Sri Lanka.

Ms. LU talked about her life during a summer exchange at Oxford University. She advised her fellow students that before going on an exchange, it’s necessary to understand the local teaching method. While studying there, one should also try to integrate into the local life to have a sense of immersion. After the sharing, the students actively answered questions from the audience

(MLC) Two Laws Ambassadors in the Making: Student Trainees Set to Shine

2023-12-13T00:00:11+08:00

A group of five patriotic student trainees, Chen Huiying, Chen Ziyi, Cheong Kam Pui, Duan Jiatong, and Zhang Xinyuan is on the path to becoming potential ambassadors for the “Two Laws” initiative for MLC. The program, initiated by the University of Macau, aimed at promoting awareness and understanding of “Two Laws” (Constitutional Law and Basic Law) within the college community, requires trainees to undergo a rigorous training course and participate in various activities to prepare them for their ambassadorial roles.

To qualify as Two Laws Ambassadors, student trainees are required to fulfil several key criteria. Firstly, they must complete a comprehensive three-session, five-hour training course.  The next crucial step in their journey is the simulated teaching exercise, which took place on November 8, 2023.  The results of these simulations was assessed by FLL researcher, Ms. Zhao Yinjie, and all five trainees received outstanding results. It was not just aesthetics of the presentation that was impressive, the depth and clarity of the contents  had truly stood out.

Next semester, our student trainees will organize at least two promotion event related to “Two Laws” in MLC. These events aim to raise awareness and engage fellow students in discussions about the “Two Laws” initiative, fostering a deeper understanding of its significance.  As they continue their journey, stay tuned for updates on their promotional activities.

MLC’s Knowledge Integration with FSS: Media Literacy: How to be a Smart Media Consumer?

2023-12-08T00:00:12+08:00

Critical thinking plays a crucial role in the realm of knowledge integration within the seven competencies of RC education. In our contemporary world, where information inundates us, acquiring the ability to discern the potentials and limitations of media is of paramount importance. Equally vital is the skill to identify biases present in media content. Recognizing the significance of these skills, Ma Man Kei and Lo Pak Sam College had the honor of hosting Professor Lee Tien Tsung, senior college fellow, Head of the Department of Communication, to deliver a seminar titled “Media Literacy: How to be a smart media consumer?”  The centerpiece of his seminar was imparting techniques to detect the presence of fake news. These techniques revolved around a series of critical questions one should ask when engaging with news reports. Questions such as, “Where and under what circumstances was the news story originated?” and “Who stands to gain, and what were the underlying intentions?” were among the key inquiries explored. Professor Lee’s seminar enjoyed a full house attendance, drawing not only communication majors from MLC but also students from various colleges and academic disciplines, highlighting the widespread relevance of the topic.

On October 23rd, Ma Man Kei and Lo Pak Sam (MLC) organized an academic sharing event called “A Taste of Academic Research – Searching, Reading, and Writing.” The event was designed to assist undergraduate students in enhancing their research caliber before entering graduate school. It aimed to help students develop academic literacy, which is crucial for navigating through information, constructing knowledge, and producing research output. The activity was expected to aid students in refining skills and strategies related to efficient information searching, resource gathering, and academic writing.

The sharing session was organized by MLC’s Resident Tutors, Zhou Qiyue (Linda) and Ma Yaohua (Harris), who are pursuing graduate studies at the University of Macau (UM) and served as presenters on the day. They first emphasized the importance of developing academic literacy among university students and identified the essential components of this skill. Next, they shared their personal experiences in utilizing wildcards for Google searches. Additionally, they demonstrated how desktop search tools such as Wox, Filelocator, and Everything can facilitate quick searches for computer files. The presenters also guided students on effectively using the library website to locate necessary resources and introduced alternative academic databases. To illustrate the techniques of skimming and intensive reading, they utilized two academic papers from the humanities and sciences as case studies. They then introduced Zotero, a digital research tool, in aiding fast reading. Lastly, a Q&A session was conducted, allowing the presenters to engage in discussions with the students and address their inquiries.

Students thoroughly enjoyed the academic sharing session as well as the opportunity to explore various software tools to support their academic activities. The UM Residential College system nurture students’ 7 Learning Competencies, and through multidisciplinary knowledge integration this activity encourages students to nurture skills in becoming independent and self-motivated. MLC is planning to host more research training activities to further prepare its students for their research endeavors.
