UM English Debating Team wins 11 consecutive championships in inter-university debate competition

The University of Macau (UM) English Debating Team won six awards at the 19th Macau Inter-tertiary English Debating Competition, including the championship, two second runner-ups, the Grand-final Best Speaker, and two Best Speaker awards. Since 2006, the UM English Debating Team has won 11 consecutive championships in the competition.

The debate competition included three sections, the preliminary round, the semi-final round, and the final round. A total of 16 teams comprising students from four higher education institutions in Macao competed in the competition. Among them, six teams were from the UM English Debating Team, one of which has just been ranked among the top eight teams in Asia. Three of the teams entered the final round with their outstanding performance. After several rounds of competition, the UM A team, formed by Pang Lam and Tang Cheok Man, won the championship. Both the UM C team, formed by Lao Pak Fai and Zhang Kai, and the UM D team, formed by Cheong Chi I and Cheong Ian Tong, won a second-runner up. In addition, Pang Lam, Tang Cheok Man, and Cheong Ian Tong won the Overall Best Speaker, the Grand-final Best Speaker, and the Fifth Best Speaker, respectively.

UM showcases multiple research results at Science and Technology Week

The University of Macau (UM) showcased a range of research results at the Science and Technology Week 2023 cum Exhibition of Achievements in Science and Technology Innovation. The research results covered various fields, including biomedicine and Chinese medicine, information and communication and integrated circuits, energy conservation and environmental protection, and new materials and advanced manufacturing, attracting great attention from the participating guests.

A total of 21 research projects of UM and 11 companies incubated by the university participated in the Exhibition of Achievements in Science and Technology Innovation. Among them, 18 research projects were presented at the Roadshow and Session of Exchange of Contacts of Industry-University-Research Cooperation between Mainland China and Macao. Business relationships were established with several tech companies, and 36 letters of intent were signed. In addition, UM exhibited 77 research projects at the Scientific Research Projects Result Exhibition and Academic Report in Year of 2022. Wang Chunming, director of UM’s Research Services and Knowledge Transfer Office, attended the opening ceremonies of both the roadshow and the exhibition. Lu Jiahong, associate professor in the State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicine, and Hao Tianwei, assistant professor in the Faculty of Science and Technology, gave presentations on their respective research projects.

UM students win award in national bridge design competition for university students

Students from the University of Macau (UM) participated in the Mao Yisheng Public Welfare Bridge—Little Bridge Project, a national bridge design competition for university students. The UM team stood out from a total of 91 teams from 47 universities, including Tsinghua University, Zhejiang University, and Tongji University, and won a second prize, which was the best result among the participating universities from the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and from abroad.

The five members of the UM team, Gui Piao, Niu Mengkai, Wong Man Iok, Rong Wanjun, and Guan Yuxiang, are students in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of the Faculty of Science and Technology and the State Key Laboratory of Internet of Things for Smart City. Under the guidance of Prof Yan Wangji and Prof Lam Chi Chiu, the students presented a design proposal for a steel arch bridge that resembles the Golden Lotus, a sculpture gifted by the central government to Macao. During the design process, the team took into account factors including public interest, scientific nature, innovation, practicality, and cost-effectiveness. They then conducted detailed modelling and computational analysis, integrating innovative elements associated with smart cities, energy efficiency, and environmental protection. Their design received positive feedback from the experts in the final round of the competition.

This year’s competition was jointly organised by the Peking Mao Yi-sheng Science and Technology Education Foundation and Southwest Jiaotong University, with support from the Committee of the Communist Youth League Directly Under the Ministry of Transport, the Steering Committee for Teaching of Communications and Transportation in Higher Education of the Ministry of Education, and the Steering Committee for Teaching of Civil Engineering in Higher Education of the Ministry of Education. With its wide coverage and influence, the competition has been recognised as one of the most prestigious competitions in the fields of civil and transportation engineering in mainland China. The judging panel is made up of members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, national masters of engineering survey and design, acclaimed industry experts, and renowned scholars. The competition requires participating teams to submit a proposal that includes design descriptions, bridge design drawings, calculations, practical information, and sand table models.

UM’s Faculty of Science and Technology places emphasis on whole-person education and encourages students to take part in various competitions to improve their practical skills. The captioned competition is a great opportunity for students to develop their expertise in innovation and bridge design and construction. The faculty also strives to nurture high-calibre talent by integrating emerging technologies into teaching. The inauguration ceremony of UM’s Suao Pavilion

The University of Macau (UM) held the inauguration ceremony of the Suao Pavilion and the opening ceremony of the Second Festival of Chinese Culture. The event was attended by a total of 60 guests, including government officials and representatives of UM and other associations. The Suao Pavilion was built through donations by the Jiangsu Overseas Friendship Association and the Suzhou Overseas Friendship Association. It is located on the lawn outside the Cultural Building at UM. The pavilion symbolises the cultural exchanges between Jiangsu and Macao, as well as the heritage of Chinese history and culture. It not only enriches the cultural landscape of the campus, but also demonstrates the harmonious coexistence of the Jiangnan and Lingnan cultures.

On the other hand, the event kicked off the Second Festival of Chinese Culture organised by the Centre for Chinese History and Culture of UM. The festival has three components: 1) lectures, promotion, and education on Chinese history and culture; 2) exhibitions, performances, and demonstrations on Chinese history and culture; and 3) forums, seminars, and debates on Chinese culture and Macao culture. In addition, the Henan Research Institute of Culture and History was invited to be the co-organiser of the festival, in the hope of enhancing the academic quality of the forums with its rich academic resources. The university will be holding nearly 100 activities with its partner universities during the festival.

Traditional Medicine Innovation Alliance inaugurated

To improve the level of cooperation in traditional medicine innovation, the University of Macau (UM) took the initiative to establish the Traditional Medicine Innovation Alliance with top universities and research institutes in Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and South Korea. The inauguration ceremony and first board of directors meeting of the alliance was held today (10 October). Initiated by UM, the National University of Singapore, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, the Sarawak Biodiversity Centre in Malaysia, and Seoul National University in South Korea, the alliance will bring together experts and institutes in traditional medicine in the region to create a new landscape for the traditional medicine industry in Asia. Speaking at the ceremony, Yonghua Song, rector of UM, said that the alliance will contribute to the Macao SAR’s economic diversification and the high-quality development of the Chinese medicine industry in Macao. He also expressed hope that the alliance members will work together to improve the level of cooperation between Asian universities and research institutes in traditional medicine innovation and the commercialisation of research results, and develop in-depth cooperation in the areas of resource sharing, research collaboration, talent cultivation, collaborative innovation, and social services.

Tsinghua University’s original drama Ma Lan Hua Kai premiered at UM

Tsinghua University’s original drama Ma Lan Hua Kai was premiered at the University of Macau (UM). The event is organised by the China Association for Science and Technology, the Ministry of Education, the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Chinese Academy of Engineering, the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles, and the Macao SAR Government. It is co-organised by the Education and Youth Development Bureau of the Macao SAR Government and the Association for Promotion of Science & Technology of Macau, and hosted by Tsinghua University and UM.

Qiu Yong, secretary of the Party Committee of Tsinghua University, delivered a speech at the event. He said that Tsinghua University has produced many talent for the country and that Deng Jiaxian, the protagonist of the drama, was one of its most outstanding figures. The drama was staged in Macao to promote patriotism, encourage dedication to science, and strengthen cooperation and exchanges between Tsinghua University and Macao. He also expressed good wishes for the successful implementation of the ‘One Country, Two Systems’ policy.

The drama Ma Lan Hua Kai recounts the extraordinary life of Deng Jiaxian, a Tsinghua alumnus and a recipient of the Two Bombs and One Satellite Award, who devoted himself to China’s nuclear weapons programmes. Its premiere at UM attracted nearly 1,000 audiences, including government officials, UM Rector Yonghua Song, as well as people from all walks of life in Macao, representatives of scientific and technological workers, representatives of universities and secondary schools, and Tsinghua University alumni.

UM, Tsinghua University establish strategic partnership

A delegation led by Qiu Yong, secretary of the Party Committee of Tsinghua University, today (5 October) visited the University of Macau (UM) and was warmly received by UM Rector Yonghua Song and Vice Rector Mok Kai Meng. The two universities agreed to establish a strategic partnership to promote the development of education and research in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

Song said that the establishment of a strategic partnership between UM and Tsinghua University will promote in-depth cooperation between the two universities in areas such as talent cultivation, academic research, library, and residential college, and facilitate the development of higher education and scientific research in the Greater Bay Area. Qiu expressed hope that the two universities will actively strengthen research cooperation and exchanges in various disciplines and promote joint training programmes. In addition, Henry Fok Pearl Jubilee College of UM and Xiuzhong College of Tsinghua University agreed to establish a sister-college relationship. Accompanied by Song and Mok, the delegation visited the University Gallery, Henry Fok Pearl Jubilee College, and the State Key Laboratory of Internet of Things for Smart City. They spoke highly of UM’s development and achievements in recent years.

UM, Sun Yat-sen University co-organise first Asia-Pacific Marketing Academy Conference

The University of Macau (UM) and Sun Yat-sen University co-organised the First Asia-Pacific Marketing Academy Conference. More than 400 representatives from over 100 mainland and international universities participated in the event. In addition, the paper co-authored by UM and Tsinghua University won a first prize at the conference.

The theme of the conference was ‘Marketing Theory and Practice Innovations in the Digital Era’. More than 200 research papers were presented in 25 panel sessions, and nearly 50 renowned scholars, including editors-in-chief and associate editors of prestigious journals on marketing from the United States, Europe, Australia, and Singapore, participated in the conference and exchanged views. Michael Hui, vice rector of UM and chair professor of marketing, delivered a keynote speech as the co-chair of the conference. Shen Hongchuan, assistant professor in business intelligence and analytics at UM, and scholars at Tsinghua University, won a first prize at the conference for their collaborative paper titled ‘An Empirical Study of Algorithm-Induced Online Information Misallocation’.

The conference was initiated by the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao University Alliance for Marketing. The alliance is committed to promoting regional and international academic exchanges and collaboration in marketing. The founding members of the alliance include nine universities, namely the University of Hong Kong, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Baptist University, the University of Macau, the Macau University of Science and Technology, Sun Yat-sen University, South China University of Technology, and Shenzhen University. The next conference is scheduled to be held in April 2024 at the City University of Hong Kong.

Fifth leadership training course for civil servants commenced at UM

An opening ceremony was held on 25 September for the fifth leadership training course for civil servants in Macao. The course is co-organised by the University of Macau (UM) and the Public Administration and Civil Service Bureau of the Macao SAR government. Yonghua Song, rector of UM, said that talent development is essential for integrating Macao into national development and UM’s Public Administration Training Centre will continue to build a sustainable talent pool for the government. Ng Wai Han, director of the Public Administration and Civil Service Bureau, encouraged the participants to make full use of the learning opportunity and apply the knowledge to their work in the future. A total of 25 civil servants from different government departments were enrolled in this year’s three-month training course, all of whom were recommended by their departments and supervising entities.

UM holds opening ceremony for DBA and EMBA programmes

The Faculty of Business Administration (FBA) of the University of Macau (UM) held an opening ceremony for the 2023/2024 intake of the Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) programme and the Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA) programme. The two programmes have admitted more than 60 business elites from Macao and mainland China for the new academic year.

At the ceremony, UM Rector Yonghua Song introduced UM’s educational mission and vision for the future. He encouraged students to integrate into the international academic atmosphere, strive for academic excellence, actively explore and be innovative under the guidance of experts and scholars, and become ambitious and pragmatic business leaders.

Ba Shusong, managing director of Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited, shared his views on the theme of ‘Accumulate Wisdom, Gain Insight, and Navigate the Future amidst Turbulence and Changes’ as a guest speaker. He discussed the impact of technological progress on the world and the roles of the economists and managers of financial institutions in such shifts. He also encouraged students to cherish the learning opportunities, accumulate knowledge and wisdom, expand their horizons and abilities, grasp the trend of economic and social progress in long-term technological advancement, and navigate the future by understanding the general trend of historical development, so as to contribute to the prosperity and development of human society.

Another guest speaker, Qiao Liang, deputy general manager of Nam Yue Group, also shared his insights on the theme of ‘Opportunities and Challenges in the Post-Epidemic Era’. He encouraged students to take the initiative in breaking down cognitive barriers, to take the first step in changing themselves, and to create unlimited opportunities for society and the community through their limited lives. He expressed hope that students would treasure the opportunity to study at UM and friendship with their classmates, pursue lifelong learning and development, and continue to work hard for the country and their lives.

In addition, Maggie Fu, director of the DBA programme, and Steven Zhang, director of the EMBA programme, shared the features and development plans of their respective programmes. Yue Zongbin and Lin Binbin, representatives of the graduates of the two programmes, shared their insights and experiences of studying at UM. Zhou Yu and Wang Hai, representatives of the new students of the two programmes, expressed their expectations and aspirations for their future studies at the university.

Guests attending the ceremony included Ge Wei, vice rector of UM and interim dean of the FBA; Xu Jian, vice rector of UM; Zhou Yisu, director of the Doctor of Education programme; and Cindy Lam, director of the Alumni and Development Office.
