【Further Study Information】Red Bird MPhil Program offered by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou)

Red Bird MPhil (RBM) Program is HKUST(GZ)’s key vehicle for practising and promoting the interdisciplinary “Hub Concept” in cultivating talented young people. Based on the notion of student-centredness, students, academic supervisors from hubs/thrusts, industry advisors and project mentors work together to complete group projects and teaching tasks. Students develop quickly in this total immersion in knowledge and skill.

Program Uniqueness

  • Project-based active learning model, encouraging students to form project teams to conduct research on integrated systems with challenging group project goals.
  • Well-designed group projects that practise the Hub Concept, are multidisciplinary and driven by real needs, are proposed by students, industry partners, academic faculties, or other channels.
  • Empower students to gain interdisciplinary knowledge, practicing team spirit and project management skills through project development process.
  • Breakthrough the traditional classroom, modularized courses are embedded into projects to ensure students get the best out of them.
  • Individual projects have a clearly defined research content to ensure student who has completed the projects successfully are able to meet the MPhil academic requirements of HKUST.

Red Bird MPhil (RBM) students, as the main contributor of the projects, are supervised by both academic and industry supervisors to ensure the deliverables of individual projects. This project-based system allows supervisors and students to synergize diverse knowledge from multiple disciplines and collaboratively contribute to the success of the team project.

生涯發展中心

Our centre provides further study, career and entrepreneurship services under the Student Counselling Section, Student Affairs Office. We aim to enhance your employability and competitiveness, increase your interest and preparation for further study, and strengthen your entrepreneurial skills through various programmes, workshops and advising services.

We issue a bi-weekly Further Study Insider to provide advice and guidance on planning and preparing for further study. We hope you will read it and find it useful in your preparation.

本中心隸屬於學生事務部學生輔導處，負責提供升學、就業及創業服務。我們透過提供各類型的計劃、工作坊及諮詢服務，致力加強你的就業能力及競爭力，提升你對升讀研究生課程的興趣及準備，以及增強你的創業技能。

我們透過每兩週發佈一次的升學情報，為你提供規劃升學及所需準備的建議和指引。希望你能仔細閱讀，從而獲得一些對你的升學準備有用的資訊。

Further Study Planning Timeline

12-18 months before the application deadline
  • Attend Tea with Professors to explore your further study interests and define your goals.
  • Look for further study information by visiting the Reading Area of our centre and by attending Further Study Talks.
  • Talk to career advising associates, professors and alumni to create a wish list of postgraduate programmes.
6-12 months before the application deadline
  • Attend Preparation Courses on Graduate Admission Tests to improve your test-taking skills and register for the required graduate admission tests.
  • Attend a Further Study Workshop to learn the basic techniques of writing a personal statement (PS) and resume.
  • Make an appointment with the Career Development Centre to review your PS.
  • Ask for letters of recommendation from professors who can give a positive assessment of your academic, work and personal qualities.
  • Request official transcripts from the Registry.
Before submitting your application
  • Follow the rules set out by the universities, for example on how to submit letters of recommendation, and submit all application documents before the deadline.
  • Get someone with a good eye for detail to proofread your documents.
  • Keep a copy of the final application.
Admission interview
  • Attend the admissions interview to convince the panel that you are what they are looking for by explaining your academic achievements, relevant experience and skills.
Before starting postgraduate studies
  • Thank those who have offered help, encouragement and support during your application process, including professors who have written letters of recommendation.
  • Check the deadlines for enrolment, payment of tuition fees, application for accommodation, orientation programme, etc. Make arrangements as early as possible.
  • Prepare yourself with the programme’s professors by browsing their profiles and researching the curriculum.

  • 向註冊處申請成績單。
遞交申請前
  • 遵守大學所訂立的規則，例如如何遞交推薦信、在截止報名日期前遞交申請所需的一切文件等。
  • 請求細心的人幫忙檢查入學申請文件。
  • 保存一份最終版本的申請。
入學面試
  • 出席入學面試，向面試官詳細描述你的學術表現、相關經驗和能力，以証明自己是一個合適的人選。
入讀研究生課程前
  • 感謝那些曾經在入學申請上幫助、鼓勵、支持你的人，包括曾經為你寫推薦信的老師。
  • 留意註冊、繳交學費、申請住宿、迎新活動等截止日期，儘早作出相應的安排。

In order to help students improve their writing skills, the instructor will teach basic writing skills of personal statement and resume in the workshop.

Administrative Fee and Attendance Policy
  • There is an administrative fee of MOP 500 for each course. Students who meet the following attendance requirements are not required to pay an administrative fee:
    1. Achieve 80% attendance AND
    2. Complete the mock tests as prescribed in the course (please refer to the relevant course information for the dates of the mock tests)
  • Please check your timetable before submitting the registration form. Students who fail to comply with the attendance policy will receive an e-debit note issued by the University. Please settle the payment before the deadline.

行政費及出席率規定
  • 每個課程行政費為500澳門元。符合以下出席率規定的學生無須繳付行政費：
    1. 出席率達80%，以及
    2. 完成課程內的模擬測驗（模擬測驗日期請查看相關課程資料）
  • 在提交報名表前，請查看你的日程表。沒有達到出席率規定之學生，將會收到學校發出的電子繳費單，且需在限期前繳付。 

 

The enrolment procedure for the courses will be “Registration → Draw → Confirmation of Enrolment”. Details are as follows:

Step 1: Registration
  1. Current undergraduate and postgraduate students interested in these courses should log on to the e-form system and complete the “Registration Form for IELTS and TOEFL Preparation Courses” between 17/08/2023 and 23/08/2023.
  2. Due to limited places, students can only enrol on one IELTS or TOEFL preparation course per semester.
  3. Priority will be given to students who can provide proof of valid IELTS or TOEFL examination within the next 6 months.
Step 2: Draw
  1. If the number of registrations exceeds the course quota, the allocation will be decided by lot on 24/08/2023.
  2. All successful applicants will be notified by email and SMS (Macao mobile number only).
Step 3: Confirmation of Enrolment
  1. All successful applicants must confirm their enrolment by replying to our email on or before 28/08/2023. Failure to respond to the email will result in the application being deemed abandoned.
  2. Students on the waiting list will be notified when places become available and must confirm their enrolment by replying to our email by 30/08/2023. Failure to respond to the email will result in the application being deemed abandoned.
  3. The Career Development Centre reserves the right to cancel the course(s) if the number of enrolments is below required.

  1. 有興趣報讀課程的在讀本科生及研究生，請於17/08/2023 至 23/08/2023 期間，登入電子表格系統，填寫「雅思及托福預備課程登記表」。
  2. 名額有限，每人每個學期只可登記報讀一班雅思或托福預備課程。
  3. 能夠提供未來半年之有效報考雅思或托福考試証明的學生，將獲優先錄取。
第二步：抽籤
  1. 如登記人數多於課程名額，本中心將於 24/08/2023 進行抽籤。
  2. 所有獲錄取者將收到電郵及短訊（僅限澳門電話）通知。
第三步：確認報名
  1. 獲錄取的學生請於 28/08/2023 或之前回覆電郵確認報名。逾期者將被視作自動放棄。
  2. 獲通知候補成功的學生請於 30/08/2023 或之前回覆電郵確認報名。逾期者將被視作自動放棄。
  3. 若報名不足，生涯發展中心保留取消該課程之權利。

Many universities require applicants to submit an application form for admission to their postgraduate programmes, as well as a personal statement and a resume. In order to help students improve their writing skills, the instructor will teach basic writing skills of personal statement and resume in the workshop.

  • Core elements, structure and format of personal statements and resumes
  • A guide to writing excellent personal statements and resumes

Target: Students who are not familiar with PS and resume writing
