CKPC’s study tour to Zhuhai Qi’ao Island was successfully completed on March 15.  Students visited the mangrove reserve, the Anti-British Anti-opium Memorial Square and the former residence of Su Zhaozheng.

In the mangrove reserve, volunteer guide introduced the living environment, distribution and classification of mangroves (such as true mangroves and semi-mangroves), as well as the important roles of mangroves in functioning as windbreaks and dikes, purifying seawater, and maintaining ecological balance. There are also various mangrove plants, such as the highly poisonous sea mango, the tung tree that secretes salt, and the sea sumac that is so toxic that it can cause blindness. In addition, the mangroves are home to a rich variety of marine life.

In the exhibition hall of Su Zhaozheng’s former residence, students learned about his life story and career footprint. Su participated in the leadership of the Hong Kong seamen’s strike and the Canton provincial and Hong Kong general strikes that shocked China and the world. He was a pioneer of the Chinese labor movement.

Students also experienced the historical evolution and development of Qi’ao Island as they strolled along Baishi Street in Qi’ao Village and visited the Qi’ao Village History Museum, Qi’ao Ancestral Temple, and Qi’ao Anti-British Anti-opium Victory Memorial Square.

CKPC Down Syndrome Buddy Group sending New Year’s blessings and greetings to Down Syndrome Families

2024-03-02T00:00:18+08:00

On the occasion of the Lunar New Year, CKPC’s Down Syndrome Buddy Group and the Macau Down Syndrome Association jointly organized a visit to send winter warmth and New Year blessings to the Down Syndrome families, who seldom join our activities.

We mainly visited 10 families, who live in different districts of the Macau Half Peninsula. Members of the group were divided into five groups and brought the New Year gifts prepared by the Association and the College to visit the families. It was the first time for the members to visit the Down Syndrome families. During the activity, we got to know more about the children and their family. Volunteers chatted with them, and we warmly exchanged greetings.

At the end of the visit, the team members returned to the Association and had a sharing. Some students said they were deeply touched by the visit as they witnessed how some families live in a really small house. They not only gained a more realistic sense of social life, but also learned to pay more attention to the underprivileged groups in the society. Some other students were touched by the love that parents have for their children. Some elderly parents still care about the future of their children and realized that they should be grateful to their parents for their contribution to the family. One of the mothers said she was in her 70s and her child was 50. She hoped that she and her child could live for another ten years, and then her child would go first and she would leave two days later. In this way, she would not have to worry. Members of the group realized that in recent years, Macao has greatly increased its efforts in helping the disadvantaged groups, and that the facilities and care services in schools and houses have been improved continuously, which has reduced the burden of the families of these disadvantaged groups. We look forward to giving more care and love to the disadvantaged groups in the future. As volunteers, we hope that we can stretch our hands further.

The Chao Kuang Piu College Me to We Leadership Adventure Team provides an opportunity for college students to challenge themselves and learn hiking skills, camping skills, and more. A three-day, two-night hiking trip was organized on the eve of the New Year holiday.

The activity started with the students planning their own route and making preparations for the hiking trip, including gathering supplies and hiking equipment. In addition to learning hiking theory, the program also included camping overnight on the mountain and acquiring skills such as outdoor safety and cooking.

The activity allowed students to increase their love for nature and learn to cherish the little nature in the city and protect it. It also expanded students’ horizons and showed their courage to help each other and explore the unknown. Among them, classmate Leong said that this mountaineering activity made him feel that mountaineering is like life, with ups and downs, and he always heads to the right place. If persists in efforts to reach the top of the mountain, will see beautiful scenery. Keep at it, the scenery is not far away.
