CKPC MTW Stand-Up Paddle course (Level 1)

2023-10-28T00:00:08+08:00

On September 17th, 2023, the Stand-Up Paddle Course (SUP) organized by CKPC Me To We Leadership Adventure Program was successfully held at Hac Sa Beach. The course was professionally taught by two coaches from Macao China Stand up Paddle Board Sport General Association. MTW students learned Star-1 and Star-2 techniques, such as forward stroking, reverse stroking and sweeping. Additionally, they learned about their new friends, like the board, the paddle, the leash, and safety overseas. With continuous practice and mutual encouragement, most of the students successfully challenged themselves and achieved their certificates.

The course was rarely held at the Hac Sa Beach. After a day of sunshine and seawater, accompanied by the equipment, we believed all the students had a new experience and self-realization. “Teamwork” and “Service to the community” are values that have always been emphasized by MTW. This course not only gave the new students an outdoor learning experience but also caused them to reflect deeply on “responsibility” and “service”. We believe that it will be a new beginning for all of them!

CKPC: Exploring Nanhai I Shipwreck

2023-10-21T00:01:07+08:00

In order to foster students’ historical and cultural cultivation as well as patriotism, the Chao Kuang Piu College of the University of Macau has organized a fruitful field trip to the coastal areas of Yangjiang and Taishan in Guangdong Province.

In early Southern Song Dynasty, the maritime silk road was well developed. Around the 1160s, one of the cargo sailing ships originated from Fujian sank in the sea near Hailing Island in Yangjiang City.  The shipwreck was found in 1987 and named “Nanhai I”.

CKPC’s study group arrived at the Maritime Silk Road Museum on Hailing Island to learn about the process of salvaging the shipwreck in 2007.  They viewed a large number of valuable artifacts such as porcelain, gold ornaments, coins and other items found in the water, as well as the relatively intact hull of the ship. The students were amazed at the highly developed commerce in the Song Dynasty and the influence of the ancient maritime silk road on the world.

Afterwards, the group went to Dongping Dai’ao village in Yangdong County to visit the fishermen’s houses, the Fishermen’s Folk Museum, and the sculpture of Zheng He. The fishing village was an essential port on the “Silk Road” and still preserves its original style. The blue sky and white clouds, as well as the smell of dried sea food in the village, allowed the students to experience the life of a traditional fishing village in southern China.

In addition, the group also visited Guliao village on Hailing Island to learn about the government’s work on village revitalization in recent years; Lushan Mountain (Windmill Mountain) to learn about the combination of environmental protection and tourism; and the Meijia Compound in Duanfen Township, Taishan to visit the largest building complex with overhang arcades in the nation and to experience the local countryside snacks.

After the trip, students will produce presentations and videos on topics such as Nanhai I, Tai’ao fishing village, village revitalization, windmill hill, and the Meijia Compound.

CKPC: Fostering multicultural communication with World Cafe

2023-10-12T00:00:07+08:00

CKPC held the first session of World Café for this semester, with the topic on Artificial Intelligence (AI). Students, including international and exchange students from different cultural backgrounds, participated in several rounds of lively conversations on this hot topic. The table hosts recorded their thoughts in graphical notes, along with stimulating drawings from some participants.
Some notable notes collected from the students:

  • Most students have been using some forms of AI tools without knowing about AI. Their AI experiences dated back 5 to 10 years and were mostly through online chat bots and internet games.
  • Students cautioned that one should use AI tools in a moderate way. Do not just copy and paste and rely on them solely. Beware of fake information. Always verify with other authoritative sources.
  • Some students used chatGPT to improve writing, build outlines or starting points for papers, or even as entertaining or stimulating hints to enhance creativity.
  • Most students were concerned about the increasingly powerful AI tools, as they may replace certain types of jobs, become independent or even loose from human control, challenge many established legal and ethical concepts, mix fiction with reality, and fill the world with “deep fake” information.

The World Café is a group activity designed to create a friendly and welcoming environment to connect multiple ideas and perspectives on a topic. The table host engages participants in several rounds of conversation, collecting and sharing their inputs along the way. Participants also exchange ideas during the short tea breaks, which keep the flow of discussion and sharing throughout.

Students said that the World Café offers an opportunity for them to reflect on some hot or even controversial issues. During the final presentation, they were amazed at other groups’ ideas and commented that they liked this kind of idea-sharing activity.

Inspiring Seminar: Exoplanets – Legends of alien life

2023-09-28T00:00:05+08:00

On August 23, About 40 students attended the first lecture of CKPC’s Inspiring Seminar series.  Master Lau of CKPC kicked off this semester’s seminars by exploring Exoplanets, planets that orbit stars outside of the solar system.  By studying such planets, inquisitive scientists are actively searching for alien lives in the Universe.

There are many legends about alien lives, such as humanoid figures, Martians in science fiction movies, alien visitors in flying saucers, etc.  Professor Lau emphasizes the importance of critical thinking and rigorous scientific approach in order to go beyond fiction and legend. In particular, one needs scientific evidence and repeatable experiment to confirm any theory.

Professor Lau pointed out that up to now no life beyond Earth has been found, and there is no evidence that alien life has ever visited our planet.  However, as we develop more observing tools, we now have the means to explore this subject systematically and with scientific rigor.

Starting from the launch of space telescopes, Professor Lau walked through the frontier of this branch of science, including the search for Earth-like exoplanets using the transit method, astrobiology and the study of extremophiles, and possible ways to establish contact with alien lives.

Linda, the student who participated in the seminar, said that although exoplanets seem to be far away from our lives and unfamiliar to us, Professor Lau’s rich and solid theoretical knowledge made it lively and interesting, and enabled students to understand the basics of exoplanets in an in-depth manner, which also inspired their imaginations. Student Oscar also expressed his confidence in the exploration of extraterrestrial life and looked forward to future discoveries.

CKPC: Macao-Shanghai Summer Exchange Program 2023

2023-08-14T00:00:04+08:00

CKPC Guizhou Voluntary Teaching (2023-05)

2023-07-20T15:30:23+08:00

Entering Gantuan Mei’e Primary School in Congjiang County, Guizhou Province, you will see a huge mural showing Congjiang’s local characteristics and the landmarks of Macao. The slogan above the mural expresses the deep friendship between the two places. The mural was designed by Christina Cheang, a former leader of the CKPC Volunteer Teaching Team and painted by the art teacher of Gantuan Mei’e Primary School.

In February 2023, CKPC Volunteer Teaching Team recruited new members in the college, followed by training, team building, preparing lesson plans, and conducting trial teaching. After three months of intensive preparation, 17 volunteer members arrived in Guizhou to conduct voluntary teaching from May 22 to 26.

This is the fifth time for the Team to serve the children at Gantuan Mei’e Primary School after three years of absence. The content includes English, sports, art, and letter writing to Volunteer Teaching Team.  We received over 700 letters this time, breaking previous records.  Surprisingly, the children all remembered the previous members, including those already graduated. Several sixth-grade girls wrote to say that, although we will not see them next time, they hope to be admitted to the University of Macau!

Our long-term volunteer teaching service slowly ignites the dreams of children in Guizhou’s mountainous areas. In the past five years, we have also witnessed the changes in the minority areas of Congjiang, from resettlement, construction of new schools, new factories and industries, to the recent activities titled “Harmony of Urban and Rural Areas”.

As part of their new approach, Congjiang county implements gratitude education in schools to encourage students to be grateful to their parents and work hard. This time we have more opportunities to interact with principals and teachers to understand their situation, allowing us to cooperate more closely in the future.

Toward the end of the trip, the Voluntary Teaching Team identified the next team lead and deputy leads. Everyone looks forward to making persistent efforts through voluntary teaching.
