UM launches Master of Arts in TESOL programme, providing English teachers with opportunities to advance their studies

The University of Macau (UM) will launch the Master of Arts (MA) in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) programme in the 2024/2025 academic year. The programme aims to provide advanced training and learning opportunities for both pre-service and in-service English teachers in Macao, the Greater Bay Area, and beyond. Applications for the programme are now open. Individuals interested in English teaching are welcome to apply.

According to Yu Shulin, programme coordinator and associate professor at UM’s Faculty of Education, the MA in TESOL programme aims to equip students with advanced knowledge and theories in TESOL, as well as professional skills and cultural awareness essential for effective English teaching. Graduates will have access to a wide range of career opportunities in English language teaching, curriculum design and planning, and materials development and assessment. As the programme is practice-oriented, instead of a traditional research thesis, students are required to submit a project report that demonstrates their teaching practice and reflection abilities to fulfil the graduation criteria.

The MA in TESOL programme is a two-year programme. Integrating theoretical and practical knowledge of second/foreign language teaching and learning, the programme aims to cultivate reflective educators capable of designing and implementing effective English language teaching based on local and global contexts. Students will explore areas such as applied linguistics, curriculum design, intercultural communication, language testing and assessment, and English teaching pedagogy. They will also acquire expertise in teaching the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) and will learn to apply innovative teaching strategies effectively. Additionally, they will gain the skills to evaluate language curricula, implement summative and formative assessments, and develop and adapt teaching resources by integrating theoretical and practical knowledge in English teaching, so as to meet the needs of students and local contexts.

The programme places significant emphasis on fostering critical and reflective thinking and practices among English teachers. Students will engage in professional development training and field-based practices with English educators from different regions. Through experiential learning, students will have the opportunity to learn from and be inspired by the English language professionals. Graduates will possess advanced TESOL knowledge, teaching expertise, practical experience, and the skills and mindset necessary to become independent, reflective, and innovative classroom-based researchers.

Applications for the MA in TESOL programme are now open. For online applications and admission guidelines, please visit the Graduate School website at https://grs.um.edu.mo/index.php/prospective-students/. For enquiries, please call 8822 4898 during office hours or email gradschool@um.edu.mo.

UM launches master’s and doctoral programmes in fine arts to nurture interdisciplinary and innovative talent

The University of Macau (UM) will launch the Master of Fine Arts (MFA) and Doctor of Fine Arts (DFA) programmes in the 2024/2025 academic year, with the aim of fostering the growth of Macao’s arts and cultural industries and contributing to the economic diversification of the city, as well as nurturing scholarly and creative talent with theoretical expertise in the arts for the world at large.

According to Li Jun, head of UM’s Department of Arts and Design, the MFA and DFA programmes, led by distinguished art historians and creative artists in the department, will provide high-level training and development opportunities for artistic talent in Macao, the region, and the world, and promoting research and innovation in the field of art. ‘These programmes will nurture artistic talent with interdisciplinary creativity, who will not only be able to develop their talents in the field of art, but also be able to engage in dialogues and collaborations with scholars from other disciplines and fields, thereby creating more possibilities and opportunities.’ In addition, UM’s Museum of Art, which was inaugurated in May this year, combines the functions of collection, exhibition, teaching, and exchange. It not only creates a favourable teaching and learning environment for teachers and students, but also promotes the development of disciplines in the field of art and serves the public at the same time. Prof Li hopes that ‘in an era marked by the rapid development of artificial intelligence and digital media and the coexistence of crises and opportunities, UM will fully leverage Macao’s unique position in China and the world, and explore a development direction of art innovation that merges the ancient and the modern, the Chinese and the Western.’

Lampo Leong, director of UM’s Centre for Arts and Design, believes that the establishment of the more specialised MFA and DFA programmes at UM will attract more talent in the field of art and design, which can develop Macao into an important base for artistic creativity and training in art and design, as well as give new impetus to the development of art, design, and digital media arts in Macao. ‘The programmes will cultivate students’ contemporary, unique, and international character in artistic creativity through cutting-edge international teaching methods that integrate Eastern and Western elements. Prof Leong noted that in recent years, UM has produced many outstanding master’s and doctoral students in the field of visual communication. Although the department has only a few dozen of students, the students have consistently achieved remarkable accomplishments. Each year, the department’s students win numerous national and international prizes, including prestigious international design awards such as the Red Dot Best of the Best Award and the iF Design Award of Germany, as well as the A’ Design Award of Italy. They have also received national grants from the National Arts Fund and the National Social Science Fund of China, both of which are part of the country’s three major national research funds. In addition, one of their research papers published was honoured with the Great Wall Award.

The MFA programme is a three-year programme that combines theory and practice in a cross-media approach to nurture creative artists with a solid theoretical foundation. The programme covers the history and theory of contemporary art, as well as the practice of different art forms, enabling students to create a range of works that embody personal, contemporary, and international elements by employing unique artistic concepts and techniques. Graduates of the programme will be able to undertake research, creative work, and teaching assignments in a variety of art organisations, educational institutions, and other related fields. They will also be equipped with the skills necessary for admission to the DFA programme.

The DFA programme is a four-year programme that explores in depth the knowledge and skills required of artists, teachers, and researchers in the arts with the notions of ‘greatness’ and ‘creation’ as the foundation. The programme covers art history, art theory and research methods, academic writing, and the creation of a series of personal, unique, contemporary, and international works of art or design. To graduate, students must pass a qualifying examination and thesis proposal assessment, hold a graduation exhibition, complete a doctoral thesis, and pass a thesis oral defence. Graduates of the programme will become professional artists who have received rigorous training in artistic creation, art theory, and art writing. They will be eligible for a professorship in higher education institutions.

Applications for the MFA and DFA programmes are now open. Online applications and admission guidelines are available on the Graduate School website at https://grs.um.edu.mo/index.php/prospective-students/. For enquiries, please call 8822 4898 during office hours or email gradschool@um.edu.mo.

HPP-Ca@GSK納米藥物通過聲-代謝療法提升T細胞抗腫瘤免疫效應
A schematic illustration of HPP-Ca@GSK nanomedicines for augmenting T-cell antitumour immunity via sono-metabolic therapy

UM develops novel nanomedicine for augmenting cancer immunotherapy

A research team led by Dai Yunlu, associate professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) at the University of Macau (UM), has made significant progress in cancer immunotherapy. The study fabricates a new metal-polyphenol nanomedicine to regulate cancer cell metabolism using ultrasound-mediated oxidative stress and aerobic glycolysis suppression. The ‘sono-metabolic’ treatment helps reprogramme the tumour microenvironment, thereby improving T-cell antitumour efficacy. The research results have been published in the international journal ACS Nano.

Cellular metabolism is crucial for maintaining the viability and function of cancer cells and immune cells. A hallmark property of malignancy is that, even under well-oxygenated conditions, cancer cells break down glucose to produce lactic acid by glycolysis, a phenomenon known as ‘aerobic glycolysis’. The study found that cancer cells with high metabolic activity outcompete immune cells for limited nutrients available in the surrounding environment. High glucose uptake and lactate production by cancer cells not only deprive CD8+ T cells of their energy source and impair their effector functions, but also support the immunosuppressive activity of regulatory T (Treg) cells.

In light of this, the research team developed a novel metal-phenolic nanomedicine, HPP-Ca@GSK, to perform efficient cancer cellular mitochondrial dysfunction and tumour microenvironment reprogramming via sono-metabolic treatment. Specifically, the team introduced the GSK2837808A (GSK, LDHA inhibitor) to suppress glycolytic metabolism in cancer cells and recreates a high-glucose, low-lactate tumour microenvironment, which is conducive to CD8+ tumour-infiltrating T lymphocyte effector function and Treg cell destabilisation. In addition, ultrasound-mediated oxidative stress induces intracellular calcium overload, which triggers the mitochondrial disorder for highly efficient damage-associated molecular patterns exposure. This assists dendritic cell maturation and CD8+ T cell activation, enabling more tumour infiltration of effective CD8+ T cells. Finally, the assistance of aCTLA-4 antibodies further induces the phenotypic instability of Treg cells and amplifies the sono-metabolic therapeutic influence.

Prof Dai and Li Bei, research assistant professor in the FHS, are the corresponding authors of the study. PhD student Yan Jie, research assistant Li Wenxi, and PhD student Tian Hao in the FHS are the co-first authors. PhD student Yu Xinying, PhD graduates Wang Guohao and Sang Wei made important contributions to the study. The Proteomics, Metabolomics and Drug Development Core, Animal Research Core, and Biological Imaging and Stem Cell Core of the FHS also provided support for the research. The research project was supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (File no: 32222090, 32171318, and 32101069), UM (File no: MYRG2022-00011-FHS), the Science and Technology Development Fund of the Macao SAR (File no: 0103/2021/A and 0133/2022/A3), the Shenzhen-Hong Kong-Macao Technology Research Programme (Type C) (File no: SGDX20201103093600004), Dr. Stanley Ho Medical Development Foundation (File no: SHMDF-OIRFS/2022/002) and the Ministry of Education Frontiers Science Center for Precision Oncology, University of Macau (File no: SP2023-00001-FSCPO).
